Marlins deal the first of many this weekend

in Sports by

The Miami Marlins got the final weekend of non-waiver trading underway on Friday. In desperate need of starting pitching for a run at the playoffs, Miami landed starting pitchers Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea from the San Diego Padres just two days before the trade deadline. Miami made the deal without giving up any of its core lineup, but gave up pitchers Jarred Cosart and Carter Capps and two minor league players. The Marlins are hoping the two can join…

In October, 1973 Pete Rose and Bud Harrelson tangled at second base during that year’s National League Championship Series. That brawl remains one of baseball’s most recognized moments. It was also the month that the Nixon administration began to completely fall apart. At the same time half a world away, Ichiro Suzuki was born in Aichi, Japan. The Nationals fired Matt Williams shortly after a monstrously disappointing season…

Rubio made headlines when he jokingly categorized Florida State as a fallback school for those not gaining entry into UF. Florida State backers, including President John Thrasher, were quick to respond. The PPP Poll revealed that 23 percent of those responding are loyal to the Gators, while 18 percent identified the Seminoles…

There’s no crying in baseball. Remember that maxim handed down to us via Tom Hanks’ character to Madonna’s in 1992’s A League of Their Own? But there is heartbreak. Last night at Tropicana Field, Cleveland Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco came within one strike of throwing the Indians’ first no-hitter since Len Barker’s perfect game way back in 1989. But on an 0-2 pitch, Tampa Bay Rays hitter Joey Butler lined a pitch over a diving second baseman’s glove, and the no-no was…
