Charlie Justice, Mike Mikurak clash over sewage

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The two candidates for the District 3 seat on the Pinellas County Commission spent the last forum before the election as they have spent the campaign — wrangling over leadership. Democratic incumbent Charlie Justice says he has displayed leadership during his term on the commission. The commission, he says, was a “mess” when he took office four years ago: Commissioners were fighting with each other, with the mayors, with fire districts and with cities across the bay. “It was not a…

Mike Mikurak bashes Charlie Justice for St. Pete sewage dumping

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Mike Mikurak’s new campaign video focuses on millions of gallons of raw and partially treated sewage dumped by the city of St. Petersburg into Tampa Bay waters this past year. Mikurak blames the failure to maintain the city’s infrastructure on a lack of county leadership. In particular, he targets his opponent, Charlie Justice, for that lack of leadership. Mikurak, a Republican, is challenging Justice, a Democrat, who is running for his second term on the Pinellas County Commission. The video, which…

Service employees’ union endorses Charlie Justice, Carol Cook

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Florida branch of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has endorsed candidates in Pinellas County elections. At the county level, Pinellas Commissioner Charlie Justice and School Board member Carol Cook, both running for re-election, received the union’s support. At the local level, Dunedin Mayor Julie Bujalski, who is seeking re-election, also received the union’s endorsement. The union also supports renewing the one-half mill ad valorem tax for school district operating expenses. And, at the state level, the SEIU has endorsed…

5 things I think I think about today’s Tampa Bay Times

in Uncategorized by

Back before there was a FloridaPolitics.com and it was just me blogging at SaintPetersBlog.com, I would write a semi-regular screed about the Tampa Bay Times’ political coverage. This was so long ago, the Times still had St. Petersburg in its masthead. I gave up the “5 things I think I think…” column after a while because it got repetitive. (And because so many of my favorite writers — Howard Troxler, Eric Deggans, Michael Kruse —  left the newspaper). However, with 15…

Party, PAC money seeps into nonpartisan municipal races

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

When candidates run for local nonpartisan offices — mayor, council member, or commissioner — they’re supposed to keep party politics out of the conversation. And, for the most part, that’s the way it is. But in some races this year, partisan money is helping finance local candidates. Take the City of Largo, for example, where incumbent Curtis Holmes is facing Neil McMullen in the race for Seat 3 on the city commission. McMullen is a descendant of one of Pinellas…

Charlie Justice narrows fundraising gap with Mike Mikurak

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

With only three weeks to go before the election, Pinellas County Commissioner Charlie Justice has narrowed the fundraising gap between him and challenger Mike Mikurak. And thus far, Justice has spent sparingly. With about $44,633 in campaign expenditures, he’s spent about half the $96,748 Mikurak has put into the race. During the first seven days of this month, Justice raised $3,840. Among his donors was Dan Hester, a former Seminole City Council member, who founded Meow Now. Meow Now is…

Is the Pinellas County Commission a ‘real job?’ Mike Mikurak and Charlie Justice disagree

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Mike Mikurak is running hard to replace Charlie Justice on the Pinellas County Commission. He’s raised more than $100,000 to win the seat, including spending tens of thousands of his own money to unseat Justice. All for something Mikurak says is not a “real job.” Mikurak’s statement came Thursday during a visit both made to the Tiger’s Den during a luncheon of the Suncoast Tiger Bay Club. Both candidates were asked where they stand on term limits. Justice, a Democrat,…
