NFL teams can collapse after losing QB; ask 2014 Cardinals

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Peyton Manning is out. So is Andrew Luck. Tony Romo is finally ready to come back, after the Cowboys went 0-7 without him. Losing an elite quarterback can be devastating to a team. No one knows that better than the Arizona Cardinals. They are the poster child for how things can head south in a hurry when the main man goes down. Since the midpoint of the 2013 season, the Cardinals are 20-4 when Carson Palmer starts, 5-6 without him.…

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The NFL says it will increase security inside and outside its stadiums for Sunday’s games, two days after the Paris terrorist attacks. Spokesman Brian McCarthy said Saturday that there will be more security and law enforcement personnel at the venues and in parking lots, along with other added security measures. A league statement says it has been told by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI “that there are no known threats against NFL stadiums.” The league says it…

in Sports/Top Headlines by

“Concussion” delivers a hard hit to the NFL as it deals with data linking repeated blows to the heads of its players to dementia and a host of other problems. The league’s rocky dealings with Dr. Bennet Omalu, who identified a degenerative disease in football players known as CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, are the focus of the movie’s second hour. Neither…

Back before he won the Super Bowls and was known more for his rules than his rings, Tom Coughlin had one directive that sounded so extreme, it was borderline comical: If you weren’t five minutes early for a team meeting, you were late. Among those to balk, and pay the price, was Hall of Fame defensive lineman Michael Strahan. The coach and his star eventually worked out their differences, but even at his Hall of Fame induction, Strahan couldn’t resist…

The endangered running back not so endangered

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Jeff Fisher hasn’t lasted so long as an NFL coach without being a risk taker. He likes aggressive defenses, and when he was a coordinator, he loved the blitz. Fisher also builds his offenses around the running game, which goes against current NFL philosophies — at the club and league level — that passing is the most effective way to keep fans intrigued. And, oh yeah, the surest way to win. Fisher put the Rams’ first-round draft choice where his…

Prime-time games not exactly riveting NFL football

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Anyone watching last Monday night’s Giants-Eagles game must have thought they lost track on the calendar and it was being played on a Thursday. Even broadcasters Mike Tirico and Jon Grude will weigh some paper towel gets, who recognize the need to keep viewers tuned in to ESPN for as long as possible — ratings and all that stuff — couldn’t hold back the criticism. And rightly so. Tirico, as good as any play-by-play man doing any sport, was honest…
