Mitch Perry Report for 5.2.16 – Cleveland, meet California

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The imagery coming out of California late last week wasn’t extremely alarming, but it was instructive. Protestors, many of them black or brown, went a bit nuts at Donald Trump campaign appearances Thursday night in Orange County on Thursday night and to a lesser extent on Friday in Burlingame, just south of San Francisco (and right near the airport). It was similar to the sort of images we saw at an ill-fated Trump rally in Chicago last month when violent exchanges…

David Jolly refutes charge of lying in 60 Minutes story about fundraising requirement

in 2017/Top Headlines by

David Jolly is at war with a part of his own party. The National Republican Campaign Committee is pushing back hard on that “60 Minutes” piece that aired Sunday featuring the Pinellas County congressman, and specifically his legislation that would ban federal office holders from raising campaign contributions. In a letter penned by NRCC Executive Director Rob Simms to CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell, Patricia Slevin and Miles Doran, the NRCC says that Jolly lied when he told O’Donnell that he was told at a meeting shortly after being elected…

NRCC calls on Charlie Crist and Eric Lynn to oppose Obama’s Gitmo closure plan

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The National Republican Congressional Committee is calling on Democratic candidates for Pinellas County’s Congressional District 13 seat to renounce President Barack Obama’s plan to shut down Guantánamo Bay in Cuba. “Do Charlie Crist and Eric Lynn support the President and his dangerous policy,” the NRCC asked in an email. “Or will they finally stand against President Obama and put the safety of American citizens before the liberal’s insatiable political need to close GITMO?” “I was working for the President at…

9 Florida Republicans recognized as NRCC “Young Guns”

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Nine Florida Republicans are on the National Republican Congressional Committee’s “radar,” which could lead to substantial campaign support. The NRCC put out a list of 32 congressional candidates Wednesday that are in the running for support through the group’s “Young Guns” program, which helps Republican candidates challenge incumbent Democrats or get the edge running for an open seat. Florida’s nine candidates on the list topped all other states in the “On the Radar” round. “These 32 candidates all provide a…

Email insights: Charlie Crist, seagulls and the GOP’s impeccable timing

in 2017/Top Headlines by

In politics, timing is everything. A new GOP email — coinciding with Democrat Charlie Crist’s not-quite-yet announcement for his congressional candidacy — points out his “eerie similarity” with the seagulls of the Disney movie Finding Nemo. “All of those silly little seagulls just fly around obnoxiously screaming, ‘Mine! Mine! Mine!’” says the email from the National Republican Congressional Committee. The only difference is that, unlike the seagulls, Crist is not looking for his next meal, but for his next office.…

NRCC targets Patrick Murphy & Gwen Graham on 5th anniversary of ACA

in Top Headlines by

It was five years ago today that President Obama signed into law the Affordable Care Act, one of the most significant — and controversial — pieces of legislation in U.S. public policy history. Since March 23, 2010, there have been more than 50 congressional votes to repeal the law. There was one near-death experience at the U.S. Supreme Court, with another nail-biting decision coming down the pike this summer, and always, underwater public approval ratings. The latter is undoubtedly the…

NRCC obsession with Gwen Graham and ‘brass in her pocket’

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

This is funny. Chris Pack obviously doesn’t know me and/or much about rookie U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham. Then again, I should have realized back when people threw beer cans at me during my stand-up comedy phase in college that I do humor like Andy Kaufman – a few get my jokes, but most are bewildered. So, Pack of the NRCC sent out an e-mail, one of those ICYM things alerting folks about a supposedly negative piece on Graham that I wrote based…
