Mitch Perry Report for 10.14.16 – Mission creep in Yemen?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The real news is out there — you just have to search for it. While the increasingly dysfunctional presidential election grips/horrifies the nation, there are things happening in the world that U.S. citizens should be aware of — such as our involvement in Yemen. On Thursday, the U.S. military launched cruise missile strikes to knock out three coastal radar sites in areas of Yemen controlled by Iran-aligned Houthi forces, retaliating after failed missile attacks this week on a U.S. Navy destroyer. Now some might…

AFL-CIO sends out anti-Donald Trump mailers in Florida

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The AFL-CIO is dropping 67,051 direct mail pieces to union households across Florida this week attacking Donald Trump. The mailers blast Trump for not hiring local workers at his Mar-A-Lago Club in Palm Beach. Since 2010, nearly 300 U.S. residents applied or were referred for jobs at Mar-A-Lago, but only 17 were hired, The New York Times reported in February. Concurrently, Mar-A-Lago sought more than 500 visas for foreign workers. PolitiFact reported documents the resort later filed with the Labor Department…

David Brooks on Donald Trump voters, Colin Kaepernick and growing loss of connection in U.S.

in 2017/Top Headlines by

With his twice-weekly forum on The New York Times Op-Ed page, along with weekly gigs on NPR’s All Things Considered and the PBS NewsHour, David Brooks is regarded as one of the pre-eminent political pundits in the country. So when I had the opportunity to speak with him about an hour-and-a-half before his scheduled appearance at the Palladium in St. Petersburg Wednesday evening, I asked him what he thought the greatest challenge facing the U.S. in 2016. He believes it’s our increasing social…

Patrick Murphy in Tampa: Marco Rubio is trying to smear my record to distract from his terrible record

in 2017 by

Trying to build up his numbers with the Hispanic vote in Florida, Democratic Senate hopeful Patrick Murphy made a campaign stop at Arco-Iris, a Cuban eatery in West Tampa on Monday afternoon. The restaurant sits in one of the most highly concentrated district of Hispanic voters in all of Florida, and is a staple for Democrats running state-wide to visit during a campaign. His appearance came just hours after a new poll showed the Jupiter Representative trailing his GOP opponent, Marco Rubio, in the race for U.S. Senate in Florida.…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.26.16 – Mason-Dixon says the presidential race in Florida is super close

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Attention, Florida Democrats: Time to get off you a** if you want Hillary Clinton to win the state in November. A Mason-Dixon poll shows the Trump-Clinton battle in a virtual tie, with the former secretary of state up by two points, 44 percent to 42 percent. As has been said a thousand times, Trump cannot win the presidency without winning Florida, but according to this poll 10 days before Labor Day, he could win the Sunshine State in November. By any stretch, this…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.1.16 — The wheels of justice move excruciatingly slow

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

American celebrates its 240th birthday on Monday, and the 40th anniversary of the Bicentennial. I was a relatively young kid who doesn’t have a whole lot of recollection of that particular day (other than our family was on vacation someplace in Northern California), but I certainly do remember the yearlong hype into that summer. Two days ago in this space we commented on the length of the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton‘s emails at the State Department, and what was…

Mitch Perry Report for 6.30.16 — The GOP’s Tom Steyer?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There are many people in the world concerned about the pace of climate change, and are our leaders doing enough to combat it for future generations? Most of those people aren’t elected officials in the Republican Party. In recent years, the GOP has castigated San Francisco-based environmentalist Tom Steyer, tagging him with famed boogeyman George Soros as among the biggest liberals they love to loathe, ostensibly because of their financial resources to help out Democrats. Steyer’s passion is combating climate change, and his…
