Obamacare for Florida (HB 221) demonstrates why voters are angry

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

House Bill 221 is not only a sorry excuse for addressing the issue of balance billing, it’s also exactly what voters find so frustrating about politicians who campaign saying one thing while doing the exact opposite once they’re safely behind locked Capitol doors. The latest example comes from Rep. Carlos Trujillo. As a candidate, Representative Trujillo told voters he opposed Obamacare. It’s true he has supported high-profile (yet meaningless) efforts to oppose Obamacare – efforts like a 2011 constitutional amendment to…

Praise for Carlos Trujillo

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Has anyone else but me noticed that there have been more than a few stories on controversial bills that carry the name “Trujillo“? Good for him. Too often, too many lawmakers come to Tallahassee to go along and get along. But when you choose to take on the FMA or Publix or abortion clinics in your career – that takes guts. But when you take them on all at once in three different bills, well, that’s worthy of a 10-gallon…

Carlos Trujillo’s balance billing: Straight Outta Obamacare

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Carlos Trujillo’s attempt to fix balance billing (HB 221 – Health Insurance Coverage for Emergency Services) is LITERALLY lifted from the federal law commonly referred to as “Obamacare” – or as some Republicans have called it, “The end of the world as we know it.” To be fair, sometimes Trujillo’s bill tracks the federal law word for word, and other times it merely acts like a college student not wanting to be seen as plagiarizing a Wikipedia page. Gwen Graham will soon reveal her 2016 intentions

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Down deep, U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham may already know whether she will run for re-election next year. With the Florida House and Senate in agreement on the new look of her District 2 and Corrine Brown’s District 5, the writing (or map) appears to be on the wall. Graham is doing the right thing by waiting until the court makes it official. Barring something totally unforeseen, a good chunk of her Democratic support in Tallahassee, Leon County and all of…
