Serge Ibaka makes buzzer-beater to knock of Thunder

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Magic fans have been hoping Serge Ibaka would start to play like he was in Oklahoma City. On Sunday night, he did. In his first game back in the arena where he starred for the Thunder, Ibaka had his best game in a Magic uniform by far, scoring 31 points, hauling down eight rebounds and blocking four shots. His final two points came on a nine-footer with 0.4 seconds left to give the Magic a 119-117 win over the Thunder.…

Billy Donovan copes with Kevin Durant’s exit

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Billy Donovan knew it might come to this. After a remarkable rookie season as an NBA coach, he was unable to persuade Kevin Durant to stay in Oklahoma City. Call it the Kexit, as coined by the Orlando Sentinel’s David Whitley. While there is no real comparison between Durant’s departure from OKC and a nation leaving the European Union, both events produced shock waves in their own way. When Donovan left Gainesville for Muskogee, his job description was condensed to…

Kevin Durant announce he will join Golden State Warriors

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Kevin Durant is joining All-Stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson with the Golden State Warriors. Durant announced his decision Monday morning on The Players’ Tribune Monday morning. He can’t officially sign until July 7. His decision has been the most highly anticipated move of the summer. The 2014 MVP and four-time scoring champion led the Oklahoma City Thunder to the NBA Finals in 2012, and to the Western Conference finals in four of the past six years – and he’s…

St. Pete native could help Warriors survive

in Sports/Top Headlines by

To force a seventh game in the NBA Western Conference Finals, the Golden State Warriors need unanimous NBA MVP Stephen Curry to play and shoot like Stephen Curry. To beat the Oklahoma City Thunder on the road, they need Curry’s fellow Splash Brother, Klay Thompson, to make his share from beyond the three-point line. Odds are if the Warriors live to force a Game 7, another name will have some responsibility for that. St. Petersburg native Marreese “Mo” Speights has…

Rookie Billy Donovan already a great NBA coach

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Billy Donovan and the Oklahoma City Thunder are doing the impossible. The former Gator and current rookie NBA coach and his players are dominating the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors in all phases of the game, but especially coaching. The Thunder can advance to the NBA Finals if they can win Game 5 in Oakland on Thursday night. If not, they will have two more chances. Oklahoma City leads the Western Conference Finals three games to one after two…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.23.16 — Why is Mark Cuban being taken so seriously?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Well, Mark Cuban looks pretty prescient this morning. The Dallas Mavericks owner told Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet The Press yesterday that he thinks that the Oklahoma City Thunder will take the NBA title next month. The Thunder look pretty ascendant today after humiliating my Golden State Warriors last night in OKC, and now lead that series 2-1. The winner will likely face LeBron James and the very hungry Cleveland Cavaliers. So what was Cuban even doing on “MTP” anyway? Apparently being asked if…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.13.16 – Friday 13th edition

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Well, so much for that much anticipated San Antonio-Golden State NBA Western Final. Congrats to the Oklahoma City Thunder, who took down the Spurs in six. Gotta love the unexpected.  Today the Republican Party of Florida hosts their first of a two-day spring meeting in Tampa. I just realized that the Republicans always hold these type of events in Tampa, while the Democrats generally prefer Orlando. ….A transgender student who was suspended for using the restroom at school is challenging a…
