Ole Miss rides Cowboys in Sugar Bowl

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Like the other five “New Year’s 6” bowls, the Sugar Bowl resulted in a knockout rather than a decision. Playing inspired football, the Mississippi Rebels steamrolled Oklahoma State 48-20 on Friday in New Orleans. The Rebels scored early and often to decide the contest early. Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly was on target to eight different receivers, generating four touchdown passes. The nephew of former Miami Hurricanes’ and Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Jim Kelly also ran for 73 yards. It started…

The Florida Gators built a 10-point lead over the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday, and then hung on for an exciting 72-70 win in the Orange Bowl Classic at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. The Gator offense is often criticized much like the football team, but had just enough to edge the Cowboys from the Big 12. After the Cowboys took an early 8-point lead, Florida tied the game at 20 on a Dorian Finney-Smith jumper. The lead see-sawed back…

Rivalry Week provided some close games, but also a number of lopsided scores. Florida State’s 27-2 victory over Florida was much more competitive than the final score would indicate. Here are a few of the numbers that stand out after Saturday’s games. 220 – Rushing yards by No. 14 North Carolina’s Elijah Hood in the Tar Heels’ 45-34 win over North Carolina State on Saturday. Hood also scored two touchdowns as North Carolina jumped on the Wolfpack, 35-7 by the…

Unbeaten Iowa claims the fourth spot, with Michigan State and Notre Dame, the first two teams currently out of the playoff, at No. 5…

The College Football Playoff rankings show no changes among the top 5 teams this week. Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State and Notre Dame would be eligible to play for the national championship if the season was over today. Iowa remained at No. 5, but the Oklahoma State Cowboys moved into No. 6 position, despite a difficult win over heavy underdog Iowa State on Saturday. Florida has moved into the top 10 following Saturday’s win over South Carolina. The Gators now hold…

Clemson maintained their position at the top of the College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings for the second consecutive week. Clemson’s hard-fought 23-13 victory over Florida State impressed the committee enough to keep them at No. 1. The Seminoles performance, while a losing effort, allowed them to stay at No. 16 Alabama’s impressive 30-16 victory over former No. 2 LSU was enough to jump them to the second position. Ohio State stayed in the third spot, while Notre Dame jumped to…

Clemson takes top spot in AP Top 25; Florida stays at 11, FSU at 19

in Sports/Top Headlines by

For the first time this season, someone other than the Ohio State Buckeyes sit atop the AP Top 25 poll. The Clemson Tigers, after their hard-fought, 23-13 victory over Florida State, jumped two spots to claim the Number 1 position. Florida’s unimpressive 9-7 victory over Vanderbilt meant the Gators could do no better than remain at last week’s No. 11 spot. Florida State fell only two positions to number 19 following their loss at Clemson. Ohio State’s casual 28-14 win…
