Have you heard this before? The Rays lose to a first-place team

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Right now, there seems to be advantage the Tampa Bay Rays cannot overcome. A great start by the pitcher? Matt Moore retired the first 13 batters he faced. But over the next two innings, he gave up six hits and five runs. A good start by the offense? The Rays scored three times in the first and had six of their first seven hitters reach base. However, the Rays never scored again. It all added up for the Rays in…

Rays improve to 15th in the Bleacher Report power rankings

in Sports/Top Headlines by

A sweep of the Angels and a move above .500 have elevated the Tampa Bay Rays into the 15th spot in the Bleacher Report Power Rankings. That isn’t as good as the Rays want to be — it’s out of the playoffs, for instance — but it’s an improvement of four spots from a week ago. Other American League East teams include the Baltimore Orioles (seventh) and Boston Red Sox (eighth). The Yankees are 21st and the Blue Jays 19th.…

Baltimore avoids sweep on homer by former Rays minor league Joey Rickard

Who says that big hitters don’t make their way through the Tampa Bay Rays’ farm system. It’s just that when they do, too many times they end up elsewhere. For instance, consider the case of Baltimore’s Joey Rickard, who was claimed by the Orioles in December’s Rule 5 draft. It was Rickard who took Matt Moore deep for a three-run homer in the fifth inning, enabling the Orioles to win a 3-1 game. “Last year when I got to play…

Despite all the miscues, the Rays moved to .500 (10-10) with a 3-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. It wasn’t the smoothest effort by the Rays, but it was effective. Start with Odorizzi, who battled…

The hair. You recognized the hair, growing and twisting with all the life of his pitch selection. The striped stirrups. You recognized those, too. But most of all, you recognized the performance of Chris Archer, last year’s all-star, this year’s also-ran, as he shut down the Baltimore Orioles Monday night. Archer was terrific, throwing a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in the win over the Orioles. In particular, it was his change-up that led the way for the Rays (9-10).…

Rays start slowly again, drop a 5-3 decision to Baltimore

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Once again, the Tampa Bay Rays dug a hole too deep to climb out of Sunday. Tampa Bay lost a 5-3 game to the Baltimore Orioles after giving up four runs in the second inning, including a two-run home run by Manny Machado. Machado went four-for-four with two singles, a doubled, scored twice and knocked two runs in. The Rays got back to within 4-3 and loaded the bases in the eighth, but Hank Conger struck out on a pitch…
