Mitch Perry Report for 7.1.16 — The wheels of justice move excruciatingly slow

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

American celebrates its 240th birthday on Monday, and the 40th anniversary of the Bicentennial. I was a relatively young kid who doesn’t have a whole lot of recollection of that particular day (other than our family was on vacation someplace in Northern California), but I certainly do remember the yearlong hype into that summer. Two days ago in this space we commented on the length of the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton‘s emails at the State Department, and what was…

Mitch Perry Report for 6.24.16 – CNN’s questionable move

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

I was driving to a dental appointment yesterday when I heard via Sirius/XM’s POTUS channel that CNN had hired former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski as a “contributor” to their network’s political team. The motivation for hiring such a prominent surrogate, obviously, is to get somebody on set who can get into the candidate’s head, if you will. So perhaps Lewandowski can provide some insight in their political coverage. Probably not. Upon leaving the campaign this week (or being unceremoniously dumped, to…

Philip Levine says it’s time to get rid of assault weapons

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

In the wake of the mass shooting in Orlando last weekend, Democrats in Florida and across the country are demanding that Congress address gun control legislation. Though they may be ultimately unsuccessful next week, they are almost universally saying something be done. You can include Philip Levine on that list. The Miami Beach Mayor was ubiquitous this weekend at the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood for the Florida Democratic Party’s Leadership Blue conference, as he is doing little to tamp down…

Mitch Perry Report for 6.1.16 – Let the 2018 GOP gubernatorial chatter begin

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

My colleague Jim Rosica has a piece up this morning entitled, “Did Adam Putnam just launch the first ad of the 2018 gubernatorial campaign.” Check it out and decide for yourself whether indeed that’s the case. What’s truly not in dispute is that the 41-year-old Agriculture Commissioner has been the guy referred to by seemingly everyone in Florida politics as the likely 2018 GOP gubernatorial candidate. Such a premise almost assumes that he wouldn’t face any intra-party competition, which, the more you think about…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.6.16 – Philip Levine’s big move

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine is on a roll. A day after announcing that he intends to challenge Rick Scott and attempt to raise the minimum wage in his city to $13.31 by 2020, he now is airing ads in three California markets extolling his city and that higher wage. The mayor called into my weekly radio show on WMNF 88.5 FM on Thursday, happy to spread his message out to the region’s biggest media market, as rumors grow about his…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.5.16 – Requiem for a would-be contender

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

John Kasich dropped out of the Republican race for president yesterday, conceding that he won’t be the “White Knight” fantasized by #NeverTrump acolytes over the past few months. The Ohio Governor’s departure came less than 24 hours after Ted Cruz “suspended” his campaign, so now we have a full half-a-year to contemplate a Trump–Clinton showdown in November. Although at times it seemed a bit embarrassing, Kasich’s decision to remain in the race despite the fact that he only captured one…

2018 watch: Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine to host radio show on SiriusXM

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine is taking to the airwaves with a new political talk radio show premiering Tuesday on SiriusXM Insight. Levine is widely speculated to be considering a run for Florida governor in 2018. “The Mayor” will feature bipartisan, roundtable discussions and one-on-one interviews with elected officials on the most important issues facing them in running American cities and states. “I’m a huge fan of SiriusXM programming and I’m thrilled to start this new adventure with them,” Levine…
