in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The inverted pyramid that stood as an icon representing St. Pete’s downtown waterfront since the 1970s is gone, but plans to build its successor are surging forward. As the city continues to take steps finalizing the design phase of the new St. Pete Pier, the design team is introducing themselves to residents one video at a time. A video released Monday shows an excited Vince Lee, a project designer with Rogers Partners, touting the space as a way to further…

St. Pete’s Pier Park won’t be named Pier Park

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The new St. Pete Pier won’t be called Pier Park. The design concept originally pitched as Pier Park will remain the same, but the name itself will not. Instead the new Pier will simply be The St. Pete Pier. The city was notified of a potential copyright infringement in June. The St. Joe Company, a Florida real estate developer, has already staked its claim to the name Pier Park. The company developed a mixed use area of land in Panama…

St. Pete gasp moment: Pier Park critics just gave kudos to the city

After checking Squaremouth’s Pier cams, they now have an FAA approved light on the remaining core column. Kudos!” It’s perhaps the first time commenters on that site have had anything nice to say at all about the city and its Pier and represents what hopefully…

St. Pete City Council approved the final ranking of design teams bidding to undertake the city’s Pier approach project. W-Architecture tops that list and can now enter into negotiations for the $20 million project. The uplands project is part of the city’s Comprehensive Waterfront Master Plan approved earlier this year. It’s expected to serve as a grand entryway to the Pier connecting the Pier Park design to downtown’s Bayshore and Beach Boulevards. The team, which includes Destination St. Pete Pier…

No bids for Pier Park restaurant brings more Pier Park criticism

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A bidding process for a restaurant located in the Pier Park design yielded not a single interested party. Not a single restaurateur submitted a request for proposal by Thursday’s 1 p.m. deadline. The Tampa Bay Times reports the city is downplaying the lack of initial interest. “It’s early,” St. Pete director of development coordination Chris Ballestra told the Times. “This would go in a project that won’t open until 2018.” He said he wasn’t surprised the two planned spaces failed to draw interest right…
