Pier demolition becomes more obvious as giant excavator chews through concrete

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The St. Pete Pier has its first obvious blemish on the exterior of the inverted pyramid. A giant, orange excavator set up at the Pier head began chewing through concrete on the top floor of the building next to the elevator shaft at about 12:30 Monday afternoon. The excavator — so big it had to be assembled on-site — reached into the air from a controller on the ground, biting at bits of construction through metal jaws that can crush…

Local restaurants will be considered for Pier Park space

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The city will consider local restaurants for the planned eatery space at the end of Pier Park. Language in the city’s Request for Proposals now includes the word “locally.” A petition began on Change.org after some Pier Park supporters and even opponents got wind of what the city was asking for. In the original RFP language the city asked for any restaurateur submitting a proposal to “Offer a nationally or regionally recognized chain restaurant or uniquely branded destination restaurant.” The…

The team was assembled by ASD to include a combination of big-name, nationally…

Pier Park critics’ points are a stretch at best

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Don’t be fooled by misinformation being shared by Pier Park critics. Over the past several hours, numerous posts have appeared on the Vote on the Pier Facebook page that contain incorrect, misleading or overly dramatized postulations. A post Wednesday night asks, “who is the lead on the Pier Park design?” The post points out that ASD, the local architecture firm working on the project, is a “progressive interior design” firm and the larger firm, Rogers Partners, is not local. That’s mostly…

St. Pete City Council to consider Thursday $20 million for Pier uplands

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council could have another contentious meeting this week as it prepares to approve or deny Mayor Rick Kriseman’s $20 million ask for improvements to the Pier Uplands to complement the Pier Park plan already in the works to replace the iconic inverted pyramid. Changes to the city’s Intown Redevelopment Plan, or IRP, would allocate $20 million toward Pier Uplands improvements, including two restaurant shells near the St. Petersburg Museum of History and where the Pelican parking lot currently…

Advice to Pier activists: Round two

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, opponents of the city’s Pier selection process and subsequent decisions need to chill out. This isn’t a matter of who is right or who is wrong. People on both sides of the issue – those who hoped to preserve the inverted pyramid and those who support Pier Park – are passionate about the city and its immaculate downtown waterfront. Both sides’ opinions are rooted in genuine love and a desire to…
