No, City Council can’t hijack the pier selection process by voting on an ordinance

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The pier debate has grown loud since the selection committee indicated last week that the design known as Alma may be the group’s top pick to replace the inverted pyramid. That choice would ignore three separate polls showing high support for another design, Destination St. Pete Pier, and very low support for Alma. Destination renovates the current inverted pyramid and adds a series of layered decks surrounding it. Alma builds a narrow tower and replaces the current structure. In the…

Don’t forget, the Pier isn’t the only major issue facing St. Pete

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The city, well, alright, the media, has been far too preoccupied with what’s happening with the city’s pier and seems to have forgotten that there’s a looming issue still plaguing the mayor’s office. When will there be a new deal reached between the mayor and the Tampa Bay Rays to allow the Major League Baseball franchise to look outside the city for a possible new stadium site? The Rays’ home opener is Monday, April 6. St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman…

‘Vote on the Pier’ group announces petition to amend City Charter

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It appears there is already a petition circulating to put a referendum pertaining to St. Pete’s Pier on a ballot for voters. The petition, unlike the 2013 referendum that killed the Lens, would instead amend the city’s charter. In a petition posted on the Vote on the Pier Facebook page, the group wrote that Tom Lambdon, the man behind the Lens push, has started the petition drive to “amend [the city’s] Municipal Charter to provide additional protection for the city’s…

Pier survey results buried in city’s website

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete Polls president and avid Pier process watcher Matt Florell posted a screen shot of the results from a city-run survey where the public overwhelmingly chose Destination St. Pete Pier as their clear favorite. In his Facebook post, Florell noted that the results had inexplicably been removed from the city’s website. They haven’t. However, the results are now considerably harder to locate on the city’s website dedicated to all things Pier. Up until this weekend, the results were front…

Pier supporter Ed Montanari celebrates kicking the Pier can down the Pier road

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The road to a new Pier may have just gotten a little longer. After a 12-hour meeting Friday, the Pier committee kicked the can down the road by postponing its final decision on a design ranking and instead shortlisting three final plans. After a series of straw votes the team had Alfonso Architects’ the Alma ranked at the top of its list followed by Pier Park and then Destination St. Pete. That was a problem. Dozens of people rushed the…

Pier Selection Committee to announce design ranking today

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Pier Selection Committee will make its long-awaited ranking of the seven designs shortlisted to replace the current inverted pyramid Friday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. The top of those will likely take the contract. It’s been a long and tumultuous road for city officials on a quest to find a new icon for St. Pete’s downtown waterfront. In 2013 it looked like there would be a lavish over-water walkway. But it was dubbed a sidewalk to nowhere and voted…

What the low turnout on voting for a new St. Pete Pier really tells us…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Times ran a column about the St. Pete Pier yesterday by John Romano. He starts it off by saying, “the people have spoken. Or maybe they’ve just cleared their throats.” It’s a great start to a good column and he makes some very solid points. Turnout for the non-binding vote where St. Pete residents 18 and older had the chance to pick their three favorite pier designs was abysmal. There’s no other way to put it. Of…
