Pinellas cops carry torch for Special Olympics Florida

Law enforcement officers from across Pinellas spent much of Wednesday morning carrying a torch across the county as part of the annual Torch Run for Special Olympics Florida. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office arrested one of its own Friday in connection with the December shooting of a suspect during a traffic stop. Deputy Timothy Virden was arrested on attempted manslaughter charges after shooting Dylan Tompkins-Holmes twice. The shooting occurred in the early morning hours of Dec. 30 near Johns Pass. Pinellas County Jail earns three-year re-accreditation

After a roughly two-month evaluation process, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department of Detention and Corrections received a three-year re-accreditation. Pinellas County sheriff receives half million more for federal prisoner housing

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has run into some unexpected funding for its federal prisoner housing — $542,080, appropriated from the U.S. Marshals Service. The money was added to the county’s fiscal year 2015 general fund budget on Aug. 4 by the Board of County Commissioners.
