Janelle Irwin’s Fight for $15 Challenge: Day 4

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

My Fight for $15 challenge is almost done. Day 4 of the challenge is winding down and my day-to-day spending has been at or below by $17 a day budget. That of course is not counting the unexpected flat tire that required a $30 fix, extra gas from having to drive to and from Tampa to rescue my stranded beloved and a $100 expense for a medical appointment not covered by insurance. To keep within budget tonight, my family will…

Janelle Irwin’s Fight for 15 Challenge: Days 2 and 3

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Day Three of my Fight for 15 challenge is winding down, and I’ve already failed oh-so-miserably. But that’s OK – my failures only further the intended argument sweeping the nation. People just can’t live a functional life on minimum wage. For two and a half days, I haveĀ been absolutelyĀ fantastic at squandering money andĀ scrimpingĀ on meals. Tuesday, even while running around (like a chicken with its head cut off, mind you) managing the Election Day madness, I didn’t spend a single dime…

Today on Context Florida: Virginia & gun violence, Watchman & racism and understanding poverty

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today onĀ Context Florida: After several months of cooking, Peter Schorsch says a new proposed amendment to Florida’s constitution popped up this week. What is it? It’s a mouthful and is called, ā€œAll Voters Vote in Top Two Primary Elections for Congress, State Legislature, Governor, and Cabinetā€ and it basically changes the rules for how elections are conducted in Florida. When Andy Ford first began his teaching career it was in an inner city school where extreme poverty permeated nearly every…

Today on Context Florida: Jeb’s fumble, festering unrest, community worth and anger

in 2017/Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today onĀ Context Florida: Campaigns are not foreign to Jeb Bush, says Bob Sparks. However, while Jeb is not an official candidate for president yet, he spent precious time trying to recover a surprising fumble. He dropped the ball on the national stage not from a hard-hitting question by a reporter seeking a ā€œgotchaā€ response, but from Fox News prime-time star Megyn Kelly. Marc Yacht says the seeds of anarchy and civic instability are rooted in poverty, unemployment, poor education, lack…

Dan Gelber: The State of the State Floridians should hear

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Here is the State of the State that Gov. Rick Scott ought to deliver and, more importantly, that Floridians deserve to hear. Thank you Mr. Speaker. It is traditional for the governor to begin this speech with an unequivocal declaration that the state of our state is strong. The state of our state is strong, but mostly for a select few. For the one in four Florida children living in poverty today, the state of our state is fragile. Nor…
