in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In what turned out to be a very close vote, St. Pete City Council member Darden Rice was voted 2016 chair of the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority board Wednesday. Rice squeaked by Dunedin Mayor Julie Ward-Bujalski seven votes to six. “I’m tremendously honored,” Rice said of the nomination. “Leadership is so important now.” Bujalski’s defeat in the vote to succeed Clearwater City Council member Bill Jonson to head the board may have stemmed from a controversial motion she made earlier this…

The grant would also pay for charging stations to support running the buses on two of the county’s smaller routes. Those include Route 32, which serves as the downtown St. Pete circular and Route 11 running…

St. Pete City Council voiced its unanimous support for changes to bus routes in downtown that would eliminate the current hub of bus stops cluttering Williams Park. A new proposed route system is planned to kickoff on Valentine’s Day that would instead create a grid system spreading bus stops out throughout downtown rather than having them all pour in to one spot. Williams Park has served as a transit hub for more than 50 years. Officials have been trying to…

PSTA’s tough decision on hybrid bus purchase leads to greater tech focus

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

It wouldn’t be unreasonable to say the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority has kept up with its field’s technological trends. The PSTA boasts of a more robust hybrid bus fleet than any other public transit system in the state; all of its buses offer free Wi-Fi; and GPS trackers in each bus make it possible for riders to track their bus’ current and exact location. However, PSTA’s board of directors think they can do even better. To get there, they’ve decided to…
