Marco Rubio might be running for re-election, but his presidential campaign is still more than $1 million in the red. Campaign finance records filed with the Federal Election Commission show Rubio’s presidential campaign had more than $1.5 million in debt as of Sept. 30. The sum includes the costs of telemarketing services, media production, and legal fees. According to campaign finance records, the presidential campaign owed $570,657 for telemarketing; $315,000 for media production; $167,000 for legal fees; $350,000 for strategic…

Mitch Perry Report for 10.14.16 – Mission creep in Yemen?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The real news is out there — you just have to search for it. While the increasingly dysfunctional presidential election grips/horrifies the nation, there are things happening in the world that U.S. citizens should be aware of — such as our involvement in Yemen. On Thursday, the U.S. military launched cruise missile strikes to knock out three coastal radar sites in areas of Yemen controlled by Iran-aligned Houthi forces, retaliating after failed missile attacks this week on a U.S. Navy destroyer. Now some might…

Sen. Steve Daines of Montana will be fly-fishing with his wife. Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona said he has to mow his lawn (yes, he has one even in Arizona). Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska will be traveling her state by bush plane. And Sen. John McCain of Arizona will be visiting the Grand Canyon, and joked that his friend Sen. Mitch Perry Report for 7.1.16 — The wheels of justice move excruciatingly slow

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

American celebrates its 240th birthday on Monday, and the 40th anniversary of the Bicentennial. I was a relatively young kid who doesn’t have a whole lot of recollection of that particular day (other than our family was on vacation someplace in Northern California), but I certainly do remember the yearlong hype into that summer. Two days ago in this space we commented on the length of the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton‘s emails at the State Department, and what was…

Cory Booker doesn’t want to talk about being a possible VP

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Cory Booker is being discussed as a potential running mate for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, but the New Jersey Senator doesn’t want to talk about it. “You know what? I’m focused on being the best New Jersey Senator I can possibly be,” he said Saturday afternoon. “And I’m leaving a lot of that speculation for the ‘speculators’ and right now my focus is doing my job.” Booker’s comments came moments after appearing at a news conference with Congressman and…

Curt Clawson is why we can’t have nice things

in Peter/Top Headlines by

Judging by the expression on her face, Lizbeth Benacquisto appeared genuinely surprised — and touched — by the standing ovation given to her by her colleagues in the Senate upon her return to the Florida Legislature. The date was April 23, 2014, and it was the day after Benacquisto finished second in the four-way Republican primary to replace Trey Radel, who had been forced from office after being arrested in Washington D.C. on drug charges. Radel represented Florida’s 19th Congressional District, which encompasses most of…

Fox’s Sean Hannity at center of bitter campaign competition

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Sean Hannity is getting a bruising reminder that this year’s presidential campaign defies traditional political rules. The Fox News Channel and radio host had a nasty spat with Sen. Ted Cruz this past week, following criticism from both the left and right about his interviews with Donald Trump. Fox also aired the odd spectacle of Hannity sitting onstage with Trump as an audience booed lustily at the mention of Fox colleague Megyn Kelly‘s name. In an election year when cable…
