Candidates no longer in prez race take 229K votes in primaries; Jeb Bush leads with 88K

in 2017/Top Headlines by

For Jeb Bush, his presidential aspirations may be over, but not in the hearts of many of his more strident supporters. For the primaries and caucuses in 2016, nearly a quarter-million votes have been cast so far for 11 of the 13 Republicans who have already exited the race, including Bush, Ben Carson, Rand Paul, and Mike Huckabee. Eric Ostermeier of Smart Politics analyzed the first two dozen early GOP contests, finding that more than 229,000 votes – almost 2…

Seeds of GOP splinter in opposition to all things Barack Obama

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Republicans can blame their united stand against President Barack Obama for their party’s splintering. Conservatives’ gut-level resistance to all things Obama — the man, his authority, his policies — gave birth to the tea party movement that powered the GOP to political success in multiple states and historic congressional majorities. Yet contained in the movement and its triumphs were the seeds of destruction, evident now in the party’s fracture over presidential front-runner Donald Trump. Obama’s policies, from the ambitious 2010…

Mitch Perry Report for 2.4.16 – The field narrows

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Nashua, N.H. — Good morning from the Extended Stay America motel in Nashua, where it was an absolutely balmy 53 degrees at 5:30 a.m. It’s not, however, expected to get any warmer. No rain in the forecast (I don’t think) after a day that, well, if this were Florida, you’d have been hearing of severe flooding by lunchtime. By I digress. Rand Paul and Rick Santorum quit the race yesterday — er, “suspended” — their campaigns. Whatever. I’m genuinely disappointed…

Carly Fiorina calls debate process “broken” after learning she’s shut out of Saturday night forum

in 2017/Top Headlines by

With Rand Paul dropping out of the GOP presidential race, the field is winnowing out. That doesn’t mean that the rest of the 10-person field gets to stand on one debate stage this Saturday night. Although ABC, the debate sponsor, says they haven’t yet announced the lineup of candidates, Carly Fiorina says she has learned she won’t be invited – and she’s not pleased about that. “Our debate process is broken,” the only female Republican candidate writes to Party Chair Reince Priebus…

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul quits 2016 GOP presidential race

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Republican Sen. Rand Paul is dropping his 2016 campaign for president, eclipsed by other candidates who kept his base of support from growing into a viable force in the crowded 2016 field. He is now expected to turn his full attention to his Senate re-election campaign in Kentucky. The 52-year-old ophthalmologist is favored to win that race. “It’s been an incredible honor to run a principled campaign for the White House,” Paul said in a statement.  “The fight is far…

Mitch Perry Report for 1.29.16 – Ted Cruz fails to rise to the occasion

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

On MSNBC Frtiday morning, mega-pundit Mark Halperin said of Thursday night’s GOP president debate: “Ted Cruz did fine, Marco Rubio did fine.” With all due respect, Mr. Halperin, that’s pure poppycock. Cruz was supposedly the Big Dog on stage, what with the “elephant not in the room.” He blew it, and probably any chance of winning Iowa (His principled stance against ethanol subsidies isn’t helping him there either). No Iowa, no nomination, it says in this column. In a new twist,…
