in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Americans for Prosperity Florida is calling on lawmakers from both sides of Tampa Bay not to use public taxpayer dollars in the financing of any potential new stadium for the Tampa Bay Rays. “As the Rays search for a potential new sandlot to call home, their focus should steer clear of calling on taxpayers to sacrifice anymore, ” said AFPF state director Chris Hudson. His statement comes on the same day that the Tampa Bay Times published a front-page story on the…

Five women with the 2015 World Cup winning U.S. women’s soccer team filed a wage-discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission last month, seeking equal pay. “Simply put, we’re sick of being treated like second-class citizens. in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The New York  Yankees are worth at least $3.4 billion, according to Forbes. Depending on what survey you look at, they are either the 2nd or 3rd most valuable sports property in the world (behind only Real Madrid and maybe the Dallas Cowboys). Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, the home of…

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The temperature was in the mid-20s on the Northwestern campus in Evanston, Illinois, as the Wildcats played in the Outback Bowl on Friday. The host committee was cordial and accommodating to the Wildcats and their fans, but the Volunteers were a different story. Tennessee dominated both sides of the ball and looked much…

Outback Bowl: Vols’ 2015 turnaround season really began in October

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The No. 23 Tennessee Volunteers will line up against the No. 13 Northwestern Wildcats in Friday’s Outback Bowl at Raymond James Stadium. Few would have predicted such a matchup earlier, but Tennessee’s appearance was more of a long shot not that long ago. In early October even the most diehard Tennessee Volunteer fan – and there are plenty of those – had to wonder whether their team might spiral into a losing season. They were 2-3 with crushing losses at…

Mitch Perry Report for 12.17.15 — As Congress votes on spending bill, will far right turn on Paul Ryan now?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

I’m going to guess that conservatives in Congress aren’t going to turn on new House Speaker Paul D. Ryan so soon, since he’s still undergoing a honeymoon less than two months after replacing the very unpopular John Boehner. But there’s definitely unease among the far right part of the party on this omnibus spending bill that his House of Representatives will vote on tomorrow. Today comes a vote on a tax package, which apparently is only going to be supported by Republicans,…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Wednesday night, organizers with the group Regulate Florida told supporters in a conference call that they’re ending their attempt to put a pro-legalization of marijuana on the ballot next year in Florida. FloridaPolitics.com was on that call, and posted the story soon after. In a statement sent shortly after that call was completed, Regulate Florida Chairman Michael Minardi wrote, “Due to time constraints, it has become obvious we will not be able to collect the needed number of verifiable petitions…
