Stadium deal no-voters on council are going to make enemies no matter what

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

They’re damned if they do. They’re damned if they don’t. That’s likely how the majority of City Council feels about the impending conversation regarding the Rays, Tropicana Field and the future of baseball in Tampa Bay. As council convenes in its chambers for yet another workshop to discuss the longstanding stalemate between the baseball franchise and the city, five of them are again being criticized by the Tampa Bay Times. Cut a deal already, is the usual mantra of the…

Rays lose another one late despite Chris Archer

in Sports/Top Headlines by

This time, not even one of their finest pitching performances could save the Tampa Bay Rays. He had a grand slam in the eighth against Jake McGee, last year’s best reliever for the Rays. He homered…

Another game, another loss to another bad team. After a while, it seems less like a celebration that the Rays are in first place in the American League East and more like an indictment of the division itself. The Rays, still somehow in first place…

Rays continue to ache, lose James Loney to DL

in Sports/Top Headlines by

And now, a word about your still-in-first-place Tampa Bay Rays: Ouch. In a season right out of M*A*S*H, the Rays were aching a little more Monday than they were 24 hours earlier. Three players joined the hobbled masses, most notably middle-of-the-order hitter James Loney, who went on the disabled list with a left middle finger fracture. He expects to be out for 4-6 weeks. Also with day-to-day injuries are outfielder Steven Souza Jr. (left wrist sprain) and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera…

Despite injuries, Rays hold onto first in AL East

in Sports/Top Headlines by

There are days, when the bullpen is dazzling and the defense is on, when you look at them and nod. Those are the days of great declarations. Those are the days you look at the Tampa Bay Rays and nod. On such days, you think. “This! This is a first-place team!” Then are days such as Sunday, when hitting is cold and the pitching is frayed, when you look at them and shrug. Those are the days of great exasperation.…
