Here’s what’s open and what’s not this Veteran’s Day

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Veteran’s Day is Wednesday, which obviously means we should all thank a vet. But it also means a bunch of stuff is closed in observation of our nation’s heroes. So, to make it a little easier, here’s a run-down of what is and isn’t closed in St. Pete. City Hall and other government facilities including the Municipal Services Center will be closed. So, if you need to pay a water bill or parking ticket in person, do it Monday or…

City Council approves $1.1 million for new recycling trucks to serve alleys

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council unanimously approved $1.1 million to purchase four new sanitation trucks small enough to traverse narrow alley ways throughout the city. The purchase is intended to make way for alleyway recycling in January. The move comes after an ugly recycling rollout that led to several neighborhoods pleading with the city to accommodate homes where trash is collected from an alley rather than from the curb at the front of the home. Such residences account for 40 percent…

Traditional neighborhoods to get alley recycling pickup beginning in January

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman announced Monday in a video that, beginning in January, recycling will be picked up in alleys at homes where garbage is collected there. The move comes after a rocky rollout in which residents in neighborhoods where trash is collected in alleys argued it didn’t make sense to have recycling picked up at the curb. Those neighborhoods make up about 40 percent of the city’s homes and often have fenced-in front yards not conducive to rolling…

If Richmond and Tampa can offer alley pick-up for recycling, why can’t St. Pete?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

“If you have your trash collected in the alley, that’s where your recycling will be collected. If you still have your trash collected curbside, then that’s where your recycling will be collected…” Sounds simple and self-explanatory. This is what was said by Sharon North of the Public Works Department of Richmond, Va. – a city of 214,000, close in size to St. Petersburg, FL. Like our city, Richmond is also in the process of rolling out a brand new citywide…

St. Pete sanitation app lauded as useful recycling tool

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman is encouraging residents to take advantage of a city app called “St. Pete Collects” to help with the rollout of the city’s new recycling program. “Our St. Pete Collects app is super helpful; solid waste/recycling info, reminders, Waste Wizard tool. Go to your Google Play or App store,” Kriseman wrote on his Facebook page Tuesday morning. The app contains a tool in which users can enter an item into a search bar in the “Waste…

Patience needed in recycling battle

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Local media coverage has extensively covered the curbside recycling rollout that kicked off Monday, officially ending St. Pete’s reign as Florida’s largest city without a universal program. That sounds like a good thing, but the issue has been marred by controversy because the bins are only being picked up curbside despite 40 percent of St. Pete homes having alley access where trash is picked up. Reporters across the board have reported on the city’s optimism and the concerns of residents…

HONNA continues to push back against blue bins despite rollout

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Parts of the Historic Old Northeast neighborhood were among the first round of residences to have recycling picked up curbside through St. Pete’s universal curbside recycling program. The Monday morning launch came as leaders in the neighborhood continued to jockey city staff to make changes to the program to better accommodate “traditional” neighborhoods. Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association President Peter Motzenbecker led a press conference in the alley behind his home on Tenth Avenue North in Old Northeast. Motzenbecker’s is…
