The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has entered into a consent order with the City of St. Petersburg after determining the city violated environmental laws that resulted in the unpermitted discharges of sewage into Clam Bayou and Tampa Bay during August of 2015, June of 2016, and Aug. 31-Sept.13 of this year. The 11-page document was signed by Mary Yeargan, Southwest District Director for the Florida DEP and sent to St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman and Public Works Administer Claude Tankersley on…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Mayor Rick Kriseman has called for a review of the management of the St. Petersburg water resources department. Kriseman’s call comes in the wake of accusations by water resources employee Craven Askew that city officials knew closing the Albert Whitted sewer plant could cause overflows and the subsequent dumping of wastewater into Tampa Bay. Kriseman issued this statement late Friday afternoon: “Included in Mr. Askew’s email is a consultant’s report that I believe has never been shared publicly or with…

Whistleblower says St. Pete knew closing Albert Whitted could cause overflows

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The chief plant operator at one of St. Petersburg’s sewage plants says city officials knew that closing the Albert Whitted plant before improvements were made at another facility could cause overflows during heavy rains. Craven Askew said he was claiming whistleblower status because “public safety and the environment is suspected to be possibly in danger…

Kathleen Peters slams decision to close Albert Whitted sewer plant

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Considering the effect of the summer’s rains on leaky sewer pipes, it’s not surprising that Pinellas County’s aging infrastructure was a prime issue during a debate Tuesday between Kathleen Peters and Jennifer Webb. And it’s probably not surprising that the cities, especially St. Petersburg, came in for harsh criticism from Peters, a Republican running for re-election to State House District 69. Webb, a Democrat, is opposing her. “Local governments throughout the county have not done their job,” Peters said. Peters…

Remind us again what big project Rick Kriseman’s administration is good at managing?

in Peter/Top Headlines by

It is the difference between the executive and the legislative. The former is about the buck stopping here. The latter is about forming a committee to explore when would be best to meet to address the problem. It’s about management style. With a political career that included time on St. Petersburg’s City Council and as a backbench member of the Florida Legislature, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman‘s background is mostly one of committees and workshops. There wasn’t a lot of management…

St. Petersburg mayor Rick Kriseman: “It’s been a tough couple of days”

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Downed power lines, fallen trees, flooding, intersections without working traffic signals are just a few of the problems St. Petersburg is facing from the passing of Hurricane Hermine, Mayor Rick Kriseman said. And even worse, the city’s sewer system was so overwhelmed by the rains that officials had to pour “millions” of gallons of wastewater into Tampa Bay. “We know it’s been a tough couple of days,” Kriseman said. Kriseman was speaking at a press conference early Friday at the…
