in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Petersburg City Council members are considering divesting the city from fossil fuels. During a meeting Thursday, the eight-member board voted unanimously to refer to the Budget, Finance and Taxation Committee a divestment measure recommended by Mayor Rick Kriseman. The measure would affect city pensions where investments are currently placed strategically to incur the most financial benefit. City Council approval of the issue would remove fossil fuel industries from those investments. Kriseman pushed the issue as a way to encourage…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A long-discussed plan that would finally allow the Tampa Bay Rays management to begin discussing a possible stadium in Hillsborough County could come before the St. Petersburg City Council as early as next week, and indications are that the votes are there to have that happen. The immediate focus after that, of course, what sites the Rays will be looking at in Hillsborough. One of the usual suspects, when the topic arises, is the Westshore area of Tampa, which was listed…

Actually, the reason I’m even thinking of this today is that my original story idea for this column is being banked for a future story. But I thought about VP nominees this morning after the Republican National Committee announced that Nikki Haley will be given their response to President Barack Obama‘s State of the…

Bob Buckhorn, Rick Kriseman to deliver lively State of the Bay on Friday

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Neighboring Mayors Bob Buckhorn and Rick Kriseman will deliver a State of the Bay address at the Suncoast Tiger Bay Club luncheon at the St. Pete Yacht Club in downtown on Friday. The two are likely to tout their respective wins in both Tampa and St. Pete. For Kriseman that means a demolished Pier, a thriving downtown, several key steps in stamping out poverty in South St. Pete and, most likely by then, a new deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. For Buckhorn, there’s the mostly…
