Potential support for Jeb Bush has edged upward in a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released on Sunday, with the share of Republican primary voters who said they were open to his candidacy rising to 75 percent in June from 70 percent in April and just 49 percent in March. Preliminary numbers from the survey, which will be released in full on Monday night, also show that Marco Rubio has the highest margin of support among Republicans, with 74 percent who could see themselves…

Presidential announcements set 2016 campaign priorities, tone

in 2017/Top Headlines by

More than a mere declaration on entering the race, presidential announcement speeches offer a glimpse of a candidate’s priorities, principles, and views on the state of the country. Barack Obama talked of a new generation of leadership, George W. Bush argued for “prosperity with a purpose.” Each speech sets expectations and tone for the campaign to come. NBC’s Meet the Press analyzed the baker’s dozen of 2016 presidential announcements to date – 13 so far – breaking down each speech…

The speakers at the Tennessee Republican Party fundraiser over the weekend took turns heaping praise on former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the keynote speaker at the annual Statesmen’s Dinner. While Gov. Bill Haslam and Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker stopped short of an official endorsement of the likely presidential candidate, their comments did more than hint that they would welcome his entry into the race. “If we want to win the presidency we’re going to have to appeal to…

Jeb Bush sharpens elbows as GOP presidential field grows crowded

in 2017/Top Headlines by

A hallmark of the White House pre-campaign of Jeb Bush has been a genteel, understated approach. Jeb, the most erudite of the Bushes and the proverbial “adult in the room” among the supposed bomb-throwers and firebrands in the 2016 Republican field was not known for singeing his rivals, other than his Democratic bête noire Hillary Clinton. That’s changing as more candidates–recently former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum and Ohio Gov. John Kasich–are announcing or eyeing bids, writes Ed O’Keefe in Thursday’s Washington Post: Bush is not yet an official…

I couldn’t be happier this morning, after staying up until midnight last night to see my lifelong basketball team, the Golden State Warriors, defeat the Houston Rockets,  and advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1975. Of course, there’s a guy by the name of LeBron James who stands in their way of actually capturing the Finals, which should make for irresistible entertainment. LeBron returned home to Cleveland last summer, and that city hasn’t won a championship…

10’s a crowd? GOP prepares for double digits on debate stage

in Top Headlines by

The first Republican presidential debate will feature no fewer than 10 candidates. That’s according to guidelines released Wednesday by debate hosts Fox News and Facebook, which offer the first clues as to how the GOP will handle its largest presidential class in recent memory. Party officials have been working privately in recent weeks to prevent its first debate in August from becoming a nationally televised circus, while lesser-known candidates have been lobbying for access. Only announced candidates will be allowed…

GOP wrestling with too many ’16 prospects for a TV debate

in Top Headlines by

Never have more than 10 candidates taken the stage for a televised Republican presidential debate. Wish the GOP luck in trying to keep it that way. With the party’s first debate set for August, Republicans must decide to either allow what could become a nationally televised circus act, or figure out how to fairly whittle down a field likely to include eight current or former governors, four senators, two accomplished business executives and a renowned neurosurgeon. More than a half-dozen…
