Mitch Perry Report for 9.24.15 — Will the RPOF gamble on having a meaningful primary election?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There’s no question that over the past two decades that Florida has become one of the biggest swing states in the nation, a status that can ultimately determine who our next president is. It may not be the swing state (arguably you could call Ohio the ultimate swing state), but it’s crucially important, especially for the Republican Party. Like political junkies everywhere not living in Iowa or New Hampshire (or in more recent years, Nevada and South Carolina), party officials grew weary that when the presidential…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.28.15 – GOP convention memories

in Top Headlines by

While the nation’s media will focus quite correctly this weekend on the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans, anyone remember Hurricane Isaac? (Let’s not even talk about Erika). That was the storm that forced the cancellation of the first day of the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa three years ago, making today the third anniversary of the beginning of that political quadrennial event. Oh, the memories. The Tampa RNC (like the Democrats in Charlotte a week later) was only…

Jeff Brandes says he’s mad as hell, and doesn’t want to take it anymore. The St. Petersburg-based Republican state senator wrote on his Facebook page on Thursday that he will propose legislation next year that will attempt to eliminate the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission. His statement comes a day after the controversial agency announced that despite the fact that a Hillsborough judge had denied its request for a preliminary injunction against Uber last week, it would continue to write tickets citing Uber and Lyft drivers…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Fourteen Republican candidates for president met last night at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. It was the equivalent of political speed-dating, and none of them on stage were named Donald Trump. (By the way, do those things happen anymore? I did it twice in the early aughts, and what I remember from the experience was  how weary I was after standing up and moving to another table every three minutes.) Upshot? From this reporter’s perspective sitting on a couch in Tampa’s V.M. Ybor…

Mitch Perry Report for 4.17.16 — In search of where the GOP stands

in Top Headlines by

Happy Friday to you all. Greetings from Nashua, N.H., where the latest cattle call of GOP presidential aspirants and possible aspirants are congregating for the next two days. I’ve long criticized the way we elect presidents,  putting so much emphasis — too much emphasis — on two states, Iowa and New Hampshire, to define who should be leading the free world. Yes, they can do retail politics here in a way that they can’t in say, Florida (because of our state’s…
