Florida Democrats bash Alan Grayson for “self-centered rhetoric” against Patrick Murphy

in 2017/Statewide by

Former Florida Democratic Party chairman Rod Smith and former Sen. Nan Rich were among a handful of state Dems who rebuked U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson Monday for harsh comments he made against Senate rival U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy last week. Grayson went in on Murphy at a meeting of the Palm Beach County Democratic Executive Committee – Murphy’s home county party –  last Thursday. Besides going on what eyewitness accounts said was a “tirade” against Murphy, Grayson repeated his refusal to support Murphy for the Senate seat vacated by Marco Rubio should…

Bob Buckhorn battles his first major test as Tampa Mayor

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

By any measure, Tampa has flourished since its citizens elected Bob Buckhorn to become Mayor in 2011. Saddled with budget deficits in his first couple of years in office, he adroitly put the city’s economy back on solid footing post-recession. There’s been a plethora of new parks and swimming pools built throughout the city, and an expanded Riverwalk has brought a whole new focus to downtown. Improvements have been made in quality of life issues like code enforcement, adding new street lights to…

No, Alex Sink should not pick an LG right now

in Statewide by

As far as test balloons go, the one Alex Sink’s campaign floated about her naming a lieutenant governor candidate earlier than when required went over like a wounded duck — despite the part about her asking former gubernatorial candidate Rod Smith to join her on the ticket. Unfortunately, many of the people advising Sink to make an early choice “to cover twice the ground” are many of the same Democrats who have lost statewide election after statewide election.  In fact, if I…

Sink filed her qualifying papers for the office Wednesday morning, and is expected to be the only politically prominent candidate in the Democratic primary. Her campaign has been contacting key supporters for advice on a candidate for lieutenant governor, a step usually taken later on in the race. Because…

A mailpiece from Rod Smith (sorta)

in Peter/Statewide by

With less than 100 days before the primary elections, the candidates certainly are busy. Charlie Crist launched a TV commecial blitz last weekend. And in today’s mail came an attractive, albeit standard, direct mailpiece from Rod Smith’s campaign. On one side, it has a quote from Bob Butterworth and the tagline “Experience, Vision, Guts.”How forceful! By the way, the mailpiece didn’t come directly from Smith’s campaign, rather from Floridians for Responsible Government, Inc.

I was the first person to jump on the Rod Smith bandwagon

in Peter/Statewide by

I have to take the credit. I was the first person to jump on the Rod Smith bandwagon. It was about a year ago, when I first spoke with Screven Watson and then met Senator Smith, that I immediately knew he was going to be the Democratic candidate for governor. Eveyone that was supporting Smith at that point had known him for a while, so they can’t say they “jumped on the bandwagon”; they were the bandwagon. By supporting him…

A return

in Peter by

Three weeks have passed since the St. Petersburg Times published its how-is-this-newsworthy account of my fall from grace. Coupled with the impending death of my beloved father (a fact — and cause of my difficulties — that the reporter mysteriously omitted from her story), the recent past has been a very difficult time. And yet, as those close to me know so very well, the holidays are my favorite time of the year. As soon as I breathe the first…
