High school athletics bill moves in House

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

One of several bills that would overhaul the state’s oversight body for high school athletics was approved again by a House panel Thursday. The Education Committee OK’d the measure (HB 31) by state Rep. Ross Spano, a Dover Republican, without objection. It had been cleared earlier by the Education Appropriations Subcommittee in December during a committee week. Its main provision is that it would allow schools to join the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) on a per-sport basis, rather than signing up for a full…

Florida is one of only three states that still has a law on the books prohibiting men and women from living together if they are not married. Attempts in 2011 and again in this year’s regular Legislative Session to repeal it failed, but Hollywood Democratic state Sen. Eleanor Sobel hopes it finally will happen in 2016. As was the case with Fox News last month, CNN received record ratings for airing its prime-time Republican presidential debate this week, with 23 million tuning in. Thanks to Donald Trump, of course, the debates have become Must See TV. Too bad the Democrats don’t have one of those. Or how about even holding a debate? Well, that will be happening — in three and a half weeks. As has been well noted, more and more Democrats have taken issue with…

Which means that, according to 2014 census data, there are nearly 438,000 unmarried male-female couples among the state’s 7.3 million households. However, for those couples…
