Former state Sen. Greg Evers died in a car wreck near his northwest Florida home on Monday night. He was 62. The Florida Highway Patrol said that Evers drove off a curve on Griffith Mill Road, and his car was found submerged in a roadside creek Tuesday afternoon. Evers was the only person in the vehicle. Evers, a Baker Republican, was first elected to Senate District 2 in 2010 and subsequently re-elected. The district covers parts of Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties.…

Outgoing Democratic state Rep. Dwight Dudley and several Pinellas activists gathered Tuesday to call out U.S. Rep. David Jolly for his “failure to stand up for” the people of Congressional District 13. Dudley and the others gathered in Williams Park, across from Duke Energy, which they accused of “ripping off” consumers. “Big energy companies like Duke Energy continue to rip off Florida’s working families, over billing consumers by millions of dollars,” Dudley said. “David Jolly took thousands of dollars in…

The David Jolly campaign is crying foul over a new ad produced by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) that links the Pinellas County Republican with Donald Trump. The Jolly camp calls it a “fake and deceptive television ad,” because it uses photoshopped photos of Jolly posed next to Trump. The Jolly camp says there are no actual photos between the two men because they have never met each other. “This ad is a new low, even for the DCCC and Charlie Crist,” said Sarah Bascom,…

Here’s how Jim King is remembered around the Florida Capitol. The laughter was immediate and spontaneous when CFO Jeff Atwater was asked last year to recall a story about the late Senate President. “My goodness, my goodness,” Atwater said, clearly enjoying a memory. King was a fixture around the Capitol for 23 years. The Jacksonville Republican was first elected to the State House in 1986 and became one of the most powerful politicians in the state, serving as Senate President from…

The new alliance includes ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, the Florida Independent Spirits Association and Publix, according to a Wednesday news release. For three years now, various lawmakers have carried legislation – or “whiskey and Wheaties” bills – pushed by Wal-Mart, Target and other big-box retailers that would ease regulations on the sale of alcohol.
