in 2017/Top Headlines by

Although he’s hardly breaking away, Jeb Bush leads the GOP 2016 presidential field in a new CNN/ORC International Poll released Monday morning. And Marco Rubio appears to finally be gaining some traction. However, both would be crushed by Hillary Clinton if the election were to be held tomorrow. Bush tops the GOP field with 17 percent, followed by Scott Walker at 12 percent. Rubio is tied with Rand Paul in third place in the poll with 11 percent. That’s a…

in Top Headlines by

Happy Friday to you all. Greetings from Nashua, N.H., where the latest cattle call of GOP presidential aspirants and possible aspirants are congregating for the next two days. I’ve long criticized the way we elect presidents,  putting so much emphasis — too much emphasis — on two states, Iowa and New Hampshire, to define who should be leading the free world. Yes, they can do retail politics here in a way that they can’t in say, Florida (because of our state’s…

FiveThirtyEight: With Marco Rubio officially in, 2016 GOP race gets real

in Top Headlines by

When Marco Rubio at long last jumps in the race tonight at Miami’s Freedom Tower, it will mark the entry of the first Republican contender who could really make it to the White House in 2016, writes Harry Enten of FiveThirtyEight. Why, you might ask? Rubio is both electable and conservative, and in optimal proportions. He’s in a position to satisfy the GOP establishment, tea party-aligned voters and social conservatives. In fact, Rubio’s argument for the GOP nomination looks a lot like Walker’s, and Rubio is…

Monmouth University poll shows wide-open 2016 GOP field, with Jeb Bush on top

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The big news in presidential politics today is Rand Paul’s official entry into the presidential campaign, making him only the second Republican to formally enter the contest, joining Ted Cruz. Marco Rubio is scheduled to join them next week by announcing his candidacy in Miami. At the same time a new poll published by Monmouth University in New Jersey shows that there is hardly a consensus favorite this early out for the 2016 race. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush leads at 13 percent.
