Donald Trump leading Marco Rubio in Suffolk University New Hampshire poll

in Top Headlines by

Winning New Hampshire doesn’t determine anything when it comes to winning the Republican presidential nomination. If that were the case, Pat Buchanan would have been the nominee in 1996, and John McCain the party’s standard bearer in 2000. But they weren’t. Both Bob Dole and George W. Bush rallied from their stunning early losses to capture the nomination for president. But having said that, Marco Rubio can’t be too pleased to see that a new Suffolk University Poll released on…

Jeb Bush loses some momentum in Florida in new PPP survey

in Top Headlines by

A new poll shows that a majority of Floridians would prefer that neither Jeb Bush nor Marco Rubio should run for president next year. Only 37 percent of Florida voters think Bush should run for president, to 52 percent who say they think he shouldn’t, according to the survey published today by Public Policy Polling. The numbers for Marco Rubio on that front are almost identical — 35 percent say he should run, to 51 percent who believe he should sit it out. PPP…

For the 2016 presidential race, more than 18 months away, the GOP presidential field is shaping up to be the largest in recent history. Campaign staffers now targeted by oppos, no longer off limits

in Top Headlines by

On a Monday, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s PAC hired Liz Mair to guide social media and online communications. Within 48 hours, Mair resigned — a victim of past remarks that did not sit well in Iowa, an early primary state. In an age of detailed oppo research and attack politics, Mair provides a cautionary tale for presidential campaigns where targets are no longer candidates themselves, but also staffers. “The danger level has risen,” said Democratic campaign veteran Tad Devine to…

Jeb Bush navigates Iowa’s corn ma(i)ze

in Top Headlines by

Jeb Bush‘s presidential pre-campaign may hit a snag in the languid corn fields of Iowa owing to his past support of alternative biofuels, according to John Ward of Yahoo! News. While he bent some during a stump speech in Des Moines, he was somewhat less than all ears when it came to the issue of subsidizing corn for energy purposes. That may cede some valuable ground in the caucus state to challengers like Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, writes Ward: One challenge in…

Charlie Cook on Jeb’s national favorability problem

in Top Headlines by

Ah, brothers. Such an embarrassment sometimes. Jimmy Carter had Billy the beer-swilling redneck, Bill Clinton had Roger the cocaine distributor and Lyndon Johnson had Sam Houston, the other beer-swilling redneck. The conventional wisdom is that Jeb Bush will have something of an albatross around his neck owing to his brother’s relatively unpopular tenure in the White House — so then why is he polling less favorably than George W. Bush among Republican primary voters?, asks Charlie Cook in National Journal: While 86 percent of those who identified themselves as Democratic primary voters said…

Mitch Perry Report for 3.13.15 — Random thoughts

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Welcome to the hottest Friday the 13th in March in Tampa Bay history. If it’s Friday in Tallahassee, it’s vacation day. Although the regular session began just 10 days ago, lawmakers are apparently burned out, and require a three-day weekend. No hearings are scheduled today in the Capitol. Then again, the House of Representatives have been off all week. Such work ethic is what prompted David Jolly to propose a bill last year that would require Congress to meet from 8…
