Donald Trump maintains a modest lead in Iowa in a new Suffolk University poll, but the big winners from last Thursday’s night GOP presidential debate are Florida U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio and former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Florina. Trump takes 16.6 percent support, with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker next at 12 percent. Rubio is third at 9.6 percent, his best showing in the Hawkeye state in some time. Ben Carson follows closely at 9.4 percent. Ted Cruz is fifth at 7.6 percent, and Fiorina sixth at…

The Club for Growth — the D.C.-based conservative advocacy group focused on cutting taxes and other economic issues — is for the first time in its 16-year history calling on its members to donate to a presidential campaign. But they’re not being exclusive, announcing that there are five of the 17 candidates in the GOP presidential race that they will bundle campaign contributions for — Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Scott Walker. The news was first reported…

An online Reuters/Ipso poll of 278 self-identified Republicans taken after last Thursday night’s GOP presidential debate continues to show New York City real estate magnate Donald Trump dominating the GOP presidential field nationally. The survey has Trump at 24 percent, double the support of the next closest Republican, Jeb Bush, who is at 12 percent. That’s down from 17 percent from a Reuters/Ipso poll done before the Cleveland debates. Four candidates are tied for third with 8 percent support, including Marco Rubio.…

GOP steels itself for uncertainty in White House race

in 2017/Top Headlines by
trump gop debae

Before the campaign got underway, Republican Party leaders developed a streamlined set of debates and a nomination calendar that aimed to avoid a messy fight. But few envisioned a field of 17 candidates, the explosion of outside money that…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.7.15 — The morning after

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Last night was the most fun I can remember watching a political debate since Chris Matthews moderated the Charlie Crist-Jim Davis-Max Linn Florida gubernatorial debate in 2006. Anyone remember that? Let’s face it, if the same tough questions were asked by moderators at MSNBC, CNN, Univision or any of the major broadcast networks, the story of the morning (besides whatever Donald Trump did) from Republicans would be how unfair the liberal media was. As it stands, some conservatives on my Twitter…

Conservative group to air anti-debt ad during GOP presidential debate

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The Campaign to Fix the Debt is making sure its namesake argument is hashed out in Thursday night’s 10-candidate GOP presidential debate. In an ad created by the conservative-leaning Jamestown Associates firm, a game-show style announcer appears on screen with a blurred debate scene in the background. “Our next question comes from Molly about our $18 trillion debt,” he says as a giant screen overlooking an audience shows a smiling young girl with her hair tucked into a girlish ponytail.…

Email insights: Hillary Clinton TBT video may indicate she’s targeting Jeb Bush, not worried about Donald Trump

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The Hillary Clinton campaign is celebrating Throwback Thursday with a twist. Instead of seeing old photos of Hillary back in her Welsley College days, her campaign has put together a video of past comments made by GOP presidential hopefuls. “Today is Throwback Thursday, when the social media-savvy among us take to Facebook and Instagram to post photos of the goofy hairstyles and outfits we’ve had the good sense to move on from,” an email linking to the video read. “Republican…
