Free stuff is good, right? Surprisingly, not everyone agrees when it comes to beer glasses. Bills are moving in the Legislature to allow beer distributors to give away glasses from brewers imprinted with product names and logos to bars and restaurants. Now, they have to be sold. The House bill (HB 853) was first OK’d by the Careers & Competition Subcommittee last week on a 10-4 vote. Three Democrats and Republican Julio Gonzalez voted against it. The Senate version (SB…

Senate panel OKs beer bill — that beer companies hate

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A bill that—as one beer-company insider put it—could allow theme parks to “extort” advertising dollars out of them cleared a Senate panel this week. The legislation (SB 388), which allows beer companies to advertise in theme parks, was OK’d unanimously by the Senate Regulated Industries Committee with scant attention. Sen. Jeff Brandes said his SB 176 would help Florida consumers know who they’re dealing with when they buy cosmetics products, sometimes sold on the gray market on sites such as…

He has been involved in talks with the Tribe. “We’re closer now than we were…

Bill to extend Seminole Compact squeaks by Senate committee

in Top Headlines by

Today, the Senate Regulated Industries Committee squeaked through a bill seeking to extend the Seminole Compact for one more year. Lawmakers expanded a proposal allowing horse and dog tracks to operate card rooms and slot machines without offering any races. Chair Rob Bradley wrote the bill, but voted against the amendments after asking for the proposal to become a committee bill. Then, he voted against the final product. Nearly the same bloc of senators, the same ones who carried the day…
