House panel OKs proposal adding medical marijuana to Right to Try Act

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A state House panel approved an expansion of the state’s Right to Try Act, but stripped a provision from the bill (HB 307) that would have increased the number of medical marijuana dispensing organizations. The state House health care appropriations subcommittee voted 9-2 to approve the measure, sponsored by Reps. Matt Gaetz and Katie Edwards. The proposal would expand the 2015 Right to Try Act to include cannabis manufactured and sold by one of the Department of Health approved dispensaries.…

Mitch Perry Report for 2.4.16 – The field narrows

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Nashua, N.H. — Good morning from the Extended Stay America motel in Nashua, where it was an absolutely balmy 53 degrees at 5:30 a.m. It’s not, however, expected to get any warmer. No rain in the forecast (I don’t think) after a day that, well, if this were Florida, you’d have been hearing of severe flooding by lunchtime. By I digress. Rand Paul and Rick Santorum quit the race yesterday — er, “suspended” — their campaigns. Whatever. I’m genuinely disappointed…

Lisa Montelione blasts opponent Shawn Harrison’s anti-abortion House vote

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida House of Representatives candidate Lisa Montelione is criticizing her opponent, incumbent Representative Shawn Harrison, for his “direct attack” on women’s health. Harrison was one of nine Republicans in the House to vote for House Bill 1411 in the Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee. The bill would block public funding to any health care facilities that also provide abortions. “Yesterday’s vote by Shawn Harrison was a direct attack on health care access for the women of Florida and is part of a…

USF Heart Institute is largest request from Hillsborough House members

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Among the items Hillsborough County legislators are requesting in the just-unveiled 2016-2017 House budget, none looms larger than the $22.5 million sought for the USF Morsani College of Health Heart Institute. In February 2015, USF’s request to relocate its new Morsani College of Medicine and USF Heart Institute to downtown Tampa was approved, and in June, Gov. Rick Scott allotted $17 million from the state budget to fund it. The total cost of the project is about $153 million. According…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

When the Florida Legislature convenes Tuesday to begin the second week of the nine-week Legislative Session, the House Justice Appropriations Subcommittee will consider a proposal that divides the Tampa and Polk County legislative delegations. House Bill 815, sponsored by Tampa Republican Shawn Harrison, would move the 2nd District Court of Appeal from Lakeland to the Tampa area. “It’s becoming a public safety issue,” Harrison said. About 50 employees and judges work in the courthouse. A recent air quality report shows the roof…

Did Chris Sprowls just finally defeat Eric Eisnaugle for House Speaker … and by default?

in Peter/Top Headlines by

Supporters of Pinellas Republican Chris Sprowls‘ bid to become Speaker of the Florida House at the beginning of the next decade have repeated a talking point again and again about rival Eric Eisnaugle: “We’re not sure who eventually will be Speaker in 2021, but we know it won’t be Eisnaugle.” They said that after the first band of House members launched a coup against Eisnaugle. They said that after Brad Drake — the North Florida legislator who owes, in part, his victory to Eisnaugle’s…

Mitch Perry Report for 1.12.16 – SOTU time, baby!

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

OK, let’s not pretend that anyone out there is really all that interested, much less excited, that Barack Obama will deliver his final State of the Union address tonight. I would say that it’s an antiquated relic that the country has transcended, and in fact, last year’s SOTU was the least viewed since 2000. Having said that, nearly 32 million people still opted to tune into the annual ritual, broadcast up and down your cable package. That’s not bad in…
