Dispute with signature gathering firm all but dooms solar power amendment from getting on 2016 ballot

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The group behind one of two competing solar-power constitutional amendments is throwing in the towel on 2016 and “exploring options for a 2018 campaign,” according to a spokeswoman. As FloridaPolitics.com reported Thursday, a payment dispute with a signature-gathering firm made it unlikely that Floridians for Solar Choice would garner enough signatures to get on the ballot next year. The deadline to submit the requisite 683,149 signatures is Feb. 1. “All petitions gathered in Florida are valid for a full 24 months from the date of signing,…

Supreme Court approves first of proposed solar amendments

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A proposed constitutional amendment that would allow Floridians to generate and sell their own solar power passes legal muster, the state Supreme Court ruled Thursday. The court’s purview was limited to whether the language embraces one subject and uses “clear and unambiguous language” in the ballot summary. The majority said yes on both counts. Justice Ricky Polston, however, disagreed on the ballot summary portion, saying it was “confusing.” The decision clears the way for the amendment to go before voters in 2016, assuming it gets…

So why are voters not supporting the initiative being pushed by the group known as Floridians for Solar Choice? A recent Mason-Dixon poll showed it failing miserably and to the many people Schorsch spoke with, they are genuinely confused. Only 30 percent said they would vote for it while 45 percent opposed it. Today on Context Florida: Shifting discourse and two sides of Florida’s solar debate

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: The Florida Supreme Court recently invalidated the state’s congressional districts map, finding it had been drawn with unconstitutional intent to favor the majority party and incumbents. The decision is a Big Deal, says attorney Glenn Burhans, but noteworthy for another reason: Illustrating a shift in our judicial discourse and the proper place, if any, of sharp-elbowed dissent. Most Floridians agree: Solar power is an essential part of our energy future. In fact, Florida voters might even find…

‘Sunshine State’ or not, Florida badly behind on solar power

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

17Residents of the Sunshine State are finding that harnessing Florida’s abundant solar power is no simple task.
