FSU/UF rise while Miami joins AP Top 25

Both Florida and Florida State moved up in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Gators earned the 12th position, up from 13th last week, while the Seminoles climbed four spots to claim the No. 15 ranking. Florida moved up despite a loss at No. 9 Kentucky on Saturday. While they played the Wildcats tough in the 76-66 loss on the road, the Gators were impressive in their 81-66 takedown of a good South Carolina team. The Seminoles’ rise…

For the first time since 1993, the Florida State Seminoles are the sixth-ranked team in the Associated Press Top 25 men’s basketball poll. The Florida Gators managed to stay in the top 25 despite two losses last week. Florida schools’ in-state bowl wins will only help recruiting

in Sports by

We are less than three weeks from National Signing Day for college football. Florida’s power schools will, of course, do well, while South Florida is a finalist for the biggest remaining prize. Florida, Florida State and Miami each posted impressive bowl game victories in their home state, something that can perhaps sway an undecided star player. Better yet, it can impress an in-state junior or sophomore enough to put your school on the list for a future signing day. The…

USF’s Quinton Flowers throws winning TD in OT to beat Gamecocks

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Once again, the dazzling offense of the South Florida Bulls was just good enough to offset the team’s dismal defense. South Carolina scored the game’s final 18 points to tie the game. Quinton Flowers, however, threw his second touchdown pass in overtime when he scrambled to buy time,…

The last coach is looking over one shoulder. The next coach is looking over the other. But for today, at least, the USF Bulls are under the charge of T.J. Weist. How they respond will be the question of the day. The Bulls play against South Carolina today (2 p.m.) in the Birmingham Bowl, and everyone would seem to have a goal. Quinton Flowers and Marlon Mack want to keep the electric offense going. Auggie Sanchez wants to make the…

USF can prove it still has its edge against South Carolina in bowl

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The USF Bulls will have to prove that former coach Willie Taggart didn’t take his edge with him in this year’s Birmingham Bowl. Taggart, the primary play-caller for the Bulls, took the head coaching job at Oregon on Wednesday. That leaves the Bulls playing against SEC opponent South Carolina, where head coach Will Muschamp is respected for his defensive prowess. Instead of Taggart, the team will play under interim coach T.J. Weist. USF will still have offensive firepower with quarterback…

Backup quarterback Austin Appleby guides Gators to verge of division title

This time, it was good that Will Muschamp didn’t bring a lot of offense to Florida Field. Muschamp, the former coach of the Florida Gators, couldn’t muster much an attack in his return to Gainesville Saturday. His South Carolina Gamecocks gained only 256 yards in a 20-7 loss to the Gators. Florida, despite two fumbles and an interception, built a quick lead and won comfortably. The Gators are now 7-2 and in the lead of the SEC East. They can…
