Congratulations, Charlie

in Peter/Statewide/The Bay and the 'Burg by

First of all, congratulations to my dear friend Governor-elect Charlie Crist. His Senate campaign was the first that I ever worked on, so I owe much to the silver-haired, silver-tongued favorite son of St. Petersburg. I first met Charlie when he came to my high school to discuss the Youth in Government program I was involved in; not soon after he invited me and my friend Estella to be pages in the state Senate. From then after Charlie has been…

A Tale of Two Cities

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

There is a must-read in this week’s Weekly Planet, er, Creative Loafing that compares and contrasts the downtowns of Tampa and St. Petersburg: “Think of this initial story as a collection of impressions — our attempt to take the temperature of the two downtowns on an average working day. Eliot These were the last words of consequence that my father spoke before he passed away in his sleep this past Sunday. That he said them two days before his death is testament to how intelligent and lucid he remained during his four-month struggle with bone, liver and lung cancer.…

Remembering birthdays past — Part 1

in Apolitical/Peter by

Today, my 30th birthday, is a rare moment when the past is probably just as long as the future and so I can’t help but feel both hopeful and reminiscent. As for that reminiscense, I wanted to jot down a few birthday memories that I will never forget: I recall fondly my 17th birthday because, at that age, that was the first year I could go to the movies by myself to see an R-rated film. Not that I hadn’t gone…

Hate crimes skyrocket in Florida with St. Pete leading the way

in Peter by

If 32 murders this year in St. Pete wasn’t bad enough, the city also reported 49 hate crime incidents, most of any Florida city and the majority of Pinellas’ 63 reported cases, according to a study released today by Attorney General Charlie Crist. Not such a great day in St. Petersburg, is it Mr. Mayor? In the city’s defense, Police Chief Chuck Harmon cut short his holiday vacation to hold a news conference about the numbers. The figures were an…
