in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The final budget offered by the Florida Legislature provides the University of South Florida with $12 million for its new downtown Tampa medical education and research center which is expected to begin construction this fall. That’s less than the $14 million that was listed on Monday, and $5 million less than USF officials had requested from the Legislature. “We would be very pleased to receive $12 million for the USF downtown project in this year’s state budget,” said USF spokesman Adam Freeman. “It will keep the project…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Bad news for folks who were psyched that Tim Tebow was announced on Thursday to be a featured speaker at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. Like Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady before him, Tebow became the latest (former) pro quarterback who has disavowed any intentions that he would be speaking at Donald Trump’s party next week. “My goal has always been to be able to make a difference in the biggest way possible. In recent months there has been discussion about the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) moving from its current North Tampa location across the street from USF to “Vinikville.” Though Hillsborough County officials have expressed excitement about the…

Mitch Perry Report for 6.11.15 — Picking winners and losers in Tallahassee

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Times’ lead today is a story that we touched upon briefly yesterday as the Legislature is now half-way through its special session in Tallahassee — that being the very real fears among movers and shakers in Tampa that state funding for a USF College of Medicine building ($17 million) and accompanying USF Heart Institute ($15.75 million) is in peril. There is a dispute about whether the projects should be bonded, since legislators say there’s not enough funding to pay for the projects…
