Yesterday’s hero: When Kentucky’s football team almost upset Flordia

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It is a streak almost three decades old. If a Florida fan was born in 1987 or later, he has never experienced losing to Kentucky. But, oh, there have been some close calls. Sure, Florida has seasons where the game was one-sided. The Gators have won 73-7 in 1994, and 65-0 in 1996, and 63-6 in 2008. In 20 of the 29 victories, Florida has scored 35 points or more. Then there was 1993. You know, the year of “Doering’s…

Yankees hit five home runs in easy victory over Rays

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It’s too soon to call them the new Murderer’s Row. For an afternoon, however, the new New York Yankees blasted the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees hit five home runs, the most anyone has hit against Tampa Bay all season, in an 8-4 mashing of the Rays, 46-69 on the season. The Rays are the only team in the AL East that has not won at least 60 games this year. New York got home runs from Tyler Austin and…

Tim Beckham goes five-for-five as Rays win their second straight game

in Sports/Top Headlines by

So what’s so hard about this “baseball” stuff, anyway? The Tampa Bay Rays are suddenly a hot streak. Or, at least-their version of one. The Rays have won two in a row, scoring 11 runs in an 11-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. It was the second straight game in which the team scored double digits. It was the first time the Rays have won back to back games since a three-game winning streak from June 12-14. The Rays are back to within…

Georgi Hristov scores twice to lead Rowdies to third straight win

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Rowdies completed the Dream Week Saturday night. The Rowdies beat Ottawa, 2-1, for their third win in eight days. Georgi Hristov scored both goals, and the Rowdies’ defense was good enough to hold Ottawa to only one. Ottawa tied the game at the 49-minute mark, but three minutes later, Joe Cole fed Hristov with a perfect lead for his second goal of the game. This time, the Rowdies made that stand. “It was the perfect response,” Rowdies Head Coach Stuart Campbell said. “We spoke at halftime…

Home runs power Tampa Bay Rays to second straight victory

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Don’t look now, but the Tampa Bay Rays have themselves a bit of a winning streak. Following five straight losses, and 11 in 13 games, the Rays won their second straight game over the Minnesota Twins Saturday afternoon. Tampa Bay won, 7-4, behind four home runs. Steven Souza Jr. hit his 10th, a three-run blast. Evan Longoria hit his third in three games, the first time he has done that since 2013. Hank Conger and Logan Morrison also homered. Pitcher…

Magic’s Elfrid Payton improving his play down the stretch

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Here at the end of the season, Elfrid Payton is showing signs of getting it. Payton, the point guard of the Orlando Magic, has strung four straight games together, including the team’s last two victories. In those four games, Payton has 20, 14, 15 and 11 points. He also has 10, 7, 10 and 12 assists. “I thought he did a nice job defensively,” Magic coach Scott Skiles said. “He was pushing the ball, like he has been the last…

Inconsistency is key to recent slide by Orlando Magic

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The only thing consistent about the Orlando Magic these days are the results. The Magic, losers of five straight games, have struggled to finish lately. They’ve had games where they shot well, games where they shot poorly, games where they protected the ball, games where they did not. Take, for instance, guard Victor Oladipo. Last week, he had a 45-point scoring effort against the Cavs. Only six other Magic players have scored that many, led by Tracy McGrady’s 62 points…
