USF has chance for a big upset against No. 21 Temple

in Sports/Top Headlines by

So here’s the good news. In his quest for an eye-opening victory, USF coach Willie Taggart has a chance. If the Bulls could knock off 21st-ranked Temple, a team that has lost only to Notre Dame in a four-point game, that would be sure to catch some attention. It would be the Bulls’ first win over a ranked team since beating Notre Dame in 2011. The Owls are ranked for a reason. They lead the American Athletic Conference in defense,…

When on defense, USF football team is playing a game of Angry Byrd

in Sports by

At the time, the Angry Byrd wasn’t mad. He was just frustrated. Jamie Byrd didn’t want to play this new hybrid position his coaches call a “husky.” He wanted to be a free safety again and roam the back end. He thought it was better for the team and better for himself. If he was deep rather than close to the line of scrimmage. So Byrd sat in the office of coach Willie Taggart, and he pleaded his case for…

Offense sputters in USF’s defeat at the hands of Memphis

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The defense of the South Florida Bulls can feel pretty good despite a defeat this morning. They gave up 24 to a team that is averaging 53.6. They at least slowed a high-powered Memphis team down. They entertained the thought of beating the undefeated Tigers. The offense? Maybe the Bulls of Willie Taggart don’t want to talk as much about that. The Bulls fell to 1-3 on the season, losing a 24-17 decision to the  Tigers on a night when…

Harlan’s reversal of Taggart’s edict was quick…

USF coach Willie Taggart has seen the growth in QB Quinton Flowers

in Sports/Top Headlines by

USF coach Willie Taggart isn’t looking for a lot of speeches from his new quarterback. A lot of plays will do. Taggart, speaking on an ACC conference call on Monday, said he has seen growth in quarterback Quinton Flowers over the off-season, but Flowers isn’t on the football field to win a debate. The only noise Taggert seems interested in are the celebrations of touchdowns. “We talked to him this off-season,” Taggart said. “The best way for him to be…

South Florida names sophomore Quinton Flowers to be its quarterback

in Sports by

Sophomore Quinton Flowers barely made it onto the field in his first season with the South Florida Bulls. This year, he will lead them. Flowers was named as the team’s starting quarterback Monday by head coach Willie Taggert. He will lead the Bulls in their first game against Florida A&M on Sept. 5 after beating out senior Stephen Bench. Flowers played only sporadicly in his first season with the Bulls, hitting eight of 20 passes for 111 yards and rushing…
