Cross Bay Ferry sees strong ridership on first weekend

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Ticket sales for the first weekend of service of the Cross Bay Ferry were strong, with more than 70 percent of the seats sold from Friday night through Sunday evening. Nearly half the one-way trips sold at least 90 percent of the available inventory. The Cross-Bay Ferry ran seven roundtrips over the weekend. “The results are beyond our expectations, and the excitement we’re seeing for the ferry across Tampa Bay is translating into real ticket sales,” St. Petersburg Mayor Rick…

Lightning well represented in World Cup of Hockey

in Sports by

For some reason, it’s difficult to get excited about the World Baseball Classic. It occurs every two years during spring training when major league players are far from performing at their peak. The World Cup of Hockey, which begins Saturday, also takes place during training camp. It is there the similarities end. The very nature of athletic competition in a contact sport like hockey versus a non-contact sport like baseball almost guarantees a better product. This will not look like…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.27.16 – Lighting strikes no more

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The somewhat improbable Tampa Bay Lightning run for a second straight appearance in the Stanley Cup ended last night around 11 p.m. when they lost Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals to the Pittsburgh Penguins, 2-1. The Lightning were pretty thoroughly outplayed if you go by shots-on-goal, but the last eight minutes or so were absolutely nail-biting. There’s a reason why the National Hockey League is considered a distant fourth when it comes to our major sports leagues in…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.25.16 — The agony and the agony

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Tampa Bay area sports fans were hit with a double whammy of negativity on Tuesday. I also had a poor night watching people play games for profit. First of all, the Tampa Bay Lightning blew their opportunity to close out their Eastern Conference Finals series with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and face elimination tomorrow night in Pennsylvania. The Lightning played a listless game for two periods; the Penguins, playing with their season on the line, were by far the more aggressive…

Did Penguins’ Mike Sullivan outsmart himself?

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Pittsburgh Penguins trailed the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-0 entering the third period of Game 4 of their Eastern Conference Finals series on Friday. Rookie goaltender Matt Murray was experiencing a rarity in his young career: allowing more than three goals. In his 12 regular season starts, of which the Penguins won nine, he never allowed more than three. He won nine of his first 12 playoff starts, allowing four goals only once; against the President’s Trophy-winning Washington Capitals. When…

Penguins look to retool for Game 5

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The best-of-seven Eastern Conference Finals series between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning is now a best of three. With the series tied at two games each, the pivotal Game 5 is in Pittsburgh on Sunday. The way Friday night’s game ended, with the Lightning surviving the third period to prevail, 4-3, some significant questions emerged for Sunday’s game. Pittsburgh has three important questions that will officially be answered by the time the puck drops, but preliminary answers have…

Confident Lightning feel Penguins haven’t see their best

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Lightning are back home after splitting the first two games of the Eastern Conference finals, feeling good about themselves, though hardly satisfied. “We’ve got to play better to win this series, there’s no doubt,” coach Jon Cooper said Tuesday, adding the team has yet to “put our best foot forward” against the Pittsburgh Penguins. “I think now that we’ve played them two times, we know a little bit more what to expect,” Cooper added. “But I know…
