Tampa Bay Rowdies finalize 2017 Opening Day roster

in Sports by

The Tampa Bay Rowdies round out their roster by signing three more players ahead of next weekend’s season opener, pending league and federation approval. Forward Martin Paterson, goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald and defender Kyle Porter have all earned contracts after lengthy trials with the Rowdies. The trio arrived in February to train with Tampa Bay and play in preseason matches. Paterson, 29, has appeared in four matches as a trialist and scored the Rowdies’ game-winning goal against the University of Tampa…

St. Pete City Council sets Al Lang Stadium Special Election for May 2

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

On Thursday, St. Petersburg City Council voted to approve and set the Al Lang Stadium special election for Tuesday, May 2. This is another positive step in bringing Major League Soccer to St. Petersburg. The May 2 voting will allow residents of St. Petersburg to vote on giving City Council the authority to negotiate a long-term use agreement for Al Lang Stadium. The use agreement, which can’t exceed 25 years, would allow Al Lang Stadium’s primary purpose to be the home…

Easy call: St. Pete Cty Council to set Al Lang referendum

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

If all issues before the St. Petersburg City Council were as easy as the once members will consider Thursday morning, anyone could do the job. The Council has a vote scheduled to set a referendum on a plan to privately renovate Al Lang Stadium. That’s so a bid by Tampa Bay Rowdies’ owner Bill Edwards to obtain a Major League Soccer franchise for the city can continue. If the vote is anything but yes, the Council will have lost an…

Bill Edwards ‘more than entertained’ idea of partnership between Rowdies, David Beckham

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For David Beckham, the clock may be running down on a Miami stadium deal for his long-awaited Major League Soccer franchise. But, as Empire of Soccer’s Jake Nutting says, another option may be on the table – a partnership with the Tampa Bay Rowdies. “Only a little under a month into formally launching their campaign to bring the league back to Tampa Bay,” Nutting writes, “the Rowdies say they have contacted David Beckham a few times to gauge his interest…

Rowdies pluck English defender Luke Boden from Orlando

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Rowdies didn’t have to go very far for their latest addition. The Rowdies added defender Luke Boden, who has made 45 appearances for Orlando City in the MLS over the last two seasons. He made 95 USL appearances from 2011-2014. Boden, 28, is originally from Sheffield, England. Luke is a great addition to our team,” Rowdies’ coach Stuart Campbell said. “He brings a great deal of experience to our side having played in so many matches at…

Proposal for long-term deal between St. Pete, Rowdies likely to go before voters

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Rowdies are ready for the big leagues, and it appears their shot will be coming sooner than later. Major League Soccer announced last month that the Rowdies and St. Petersburg will be one of 10 cities under consideration for an expansion team. Before that happens — representing a considerable boost for both the team and St. Petersburg — the Rowdies will need to show, among other things, a comprehensive stadium plan that ensures the club will provide…

The time is right: Embrace Bill Edwards’ bold vision for Rowdies, Al Lang Stadium

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

I like Bill Edwards’ bold plan to privately finance an $80 million renovation of Al Lang Stadium in downtown St. Petersburg. I like his swagger in going hard to land a spot in Major League Soccer for his Tampa Bay Rowdies to play in that stadium. I would even go so far to say that the Rowdies and St. Petersburg are a perfect marriage of a city on the move and a sport that Americans increasingly embrace. Then again, what’s…
