Mitch Perry Report for 7.17.15 — In N.H., Scott Walker boldly declares, ‘I’m an American’

in Uncategorized by

“I love America.” Those were the first words out of Scott Walker’s mouth on Monday night when he announced from Waukesha, Wis., that he is now the 15th official candidate in the GOP 2016 presidential sweepstakes. Since the campaign began in earnest earlier this year, Walker has been considered in the top tier of candidates who could win the nomination, and I’ve said for months that the nominee would probably be Walker, Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio. But Walker is beginning…

Mitch Perry Report for 4.22.15 — The president talks climate change in Florida on Earth Day

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It is Earth Day today, the 45th anniversary of the 1970 celebration, and President Obama is marking the occasion by visiting the Sunshine State today, down at the Everglades. In his weekly radio address broadcast last Saturday, Obama discussed the threat of climate change in South Florida, saying that “rising sea levels are putting a national treasure — and an economic engine for the South Florida tourism industry — at risk.” He went on to say that “the world’s top climate…

Tampa City Council poised to vote on requesting city hosts U.S.-Cuba signing ceremony

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It was eight years ago today, April 15, 2007, when Barack Obama made his first appearance ever in Tampa. Obama appeared at the Cuban Club in Ybor City on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, giving a speech from the outdoor plaza after the famed Florida A&M marching band opened the program. But according to Tampa City Council woman Yolie Capin, the long-planned fundraising event (which only cost supporters $25) was almost canceled at the last moment, after officials back at the…

Mitch Perry Report for 3.27.15 — Could Bob Menendez fate affect Loretta Lynch as AG?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Loretta Lynch, President Obama’s choice to replace Eric Holder as attorney general, was in Tampa yesterday for the swearing-in ceremony of Lee Bentley, the new U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida. Lynch is the U.S. attorney in Brooklyn, and would become the first black female AG in U.S. history if confirmed. Obama nominated her way back in November, but she still awaits a vote in the full Senate. Lots of Republicans oppose her nomination because they’re upset over…

Criticizing ‘big money’ in City Council race, April Griffin forgets who helped her last time

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

April Griffin took to Facebook last night to congratulate Democrat Guido Maniscalco for his win in Tuesday’s formerly nonpartisan race for Tampa City Council. The frequently critical three-term Hillsborough County School Board member offered a few choice words on the subject of Maniscalco’s victory over Republican Jackie Toledo. “District 6 residents win big in this race,” Griffin told her followers. “Chalk one more up for the good guys and not big money and mudslinging.” In calling out “ugly politics,” Griffin…

Guido Maniscalco bests Jackie Toledo to win contentious Tampa City Council race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After an increasingly contentious runoff election, Democrat Guido Maniscalco narrowly defeated Republican Jackie Toledo Tuesday to represent the formerly nonpartisan District 6 on the Tampa City Council. Maniscalco, a 30-year-old West Tampa jeweler, took a late lead over Toledo, a civil engineer at CPH Engineers in Tampa, by less than two percentage points — 51 to 49 percent. Just 142 votes separated the two. With all 29 precincts reporting, 7,172 ballots were cast, a turnout of 14 percent. According to the Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections website, there are 51,964 registered voters…

A defense of my friend, political consultant Anthony Pedicini

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Anthony Pedicini is taking it on the chin right now. The Tampa-based political consultant is being dragged through the mud he otherwise expertly throws because he — let’s be honest here — is doing what almost every other successful political consultant in the state does. As Chris O’Donnell of the Tampa Tribune details, mailers touting Tampa City Council candidate Jackie Toledo were produced by the same Sarasota print shop owner who printed Toledo’s mailers and are on message with her…
