Developer takes control of BayWalk

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

TAMPA — Developer Fred Bullard, an original partner in the BayWalk retail center, has bought out the Sembler Co. for full control of the downtown St. Petersburg plaza. Bullard had owned 50 percent of BayWalk and on Thursday acknowledged buying the other half from Sembler for an undisclosed sum. He purchased the remaining portion of BayWalk through STPR Holdings, a company he controls. Bullard said he has no immediate plans for changes at BayWalk but is evaluating the plaza. “We’ve…

Yuck! Going to the Giants’ game

in Apolitical/Peter by

If it wasn’t bad enough that I had to watch the Giants beat my Buccaneers and then my Cowboys on the way to their Super Bowl win or that I had to endure watching that game surrounded by the most obnoxious bar crowd (the bartender literally sprayed the crowd with water, they were so out of control. But at least I met Jessica that night), now Kim tells me she was given tickets to a Giants’ game. And not a…

Good times in the ‘burg!

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

My best friend Mark left today after a two-week vacation. As always, we had a great time. Whether we were out and about in downtown St. Pete or chillin’ with Sherwin in Tampa, we always know how to have a good time. And if I could only record some of our conversations and podcast them; they’re just that interesting. Now that Mark’s left, I wanted to take a moment and brag (again) about how great the ‘burg is. To think…

A tale of two events for Tampa

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

If Tampa lands the 2008 Republican National Convention, the city will face playing host to two massive events just five months apart. The Super Bowl will come to Tampa in February 2009. The GOP confetti-fest is slated for September 2008. Can one city handle so much love? The GOP convention site selection committee in April posed just that question to a delegation pushing to bring the Republicans to Tampa. “We responded and said we thought it would be a good…

A Tale of Two Cities

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

There is a must-read in this week’s Weekly Planet, er, Creative Loafing that compares and contrasts the downtowns of Tampa and St. Petersburg: “Think of this initial story as a collection of impressions — our attempt to take the temperature of the two downtowns on an average working day. On two recent mid-week afternoons, the entire editorial staff fanned out, first in Tampa and then in St. Pete, to experience the state of the city in such areas as condo…

Taxpayers to foot $85 million bill for Tampa’s GOP bid

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Hosting the 2008 Republican National Convention here would cost taxpayers about $85-million, event organizers said Monday. That’s roughly two-thirds of the estimated total cost of $124-million, according to the bid package a Tampa delegation presented to the Republican National Committee in May. Nearly $22-million would come straight out of local tax coffers. This is what the mayor of San Diego said about why that city is not putting forth a bid for the RNC convention: “It is a pretty significant…

I second the motion about Caladesi Island

in Apolitical/Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

From Tampa’s best blog, Sticks of Fire: “Dr. Beach came out with his top beaches for this year, and once again (of course), Tampa Bay is represented. You may remember last year that Fort DeSoto was named the top beach in the U.S. This year, Caladesi Island ranks as America’s No. 2 beach. Caladesi Island is just off the coast of Dunedin.” Just for the record, Fort Desoto Beach has been retired from the Top 10 list. Guess where I…
