Joe Henderson: When NFL suddenly needed a Super host, it knew who to call

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It wasn’t luck that Tampa was selected Tuesday to host its fifth Super Bowl. When the National Football League learned the new stadium being built in Los Angeles won’t be ready in time for the game in 2021, it had to find a city not only ready to step in on short notice, but one with a proven record of excellence. Tampa checks all the boxes, and that’s because the team Rob Higgins has assembled at the Tampa Bay Sports…

Three metro areas in Florida were among the nation’s 10 biggest gainers in the number of people moving there last year, and another three Florida metro areas were in the top 10 for overall growth rates. Joe Henderson: Uber, Lyft here to stay – time to level the playing field with taxis

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

I have spent a lot of words arguing that Tampa and Hillsborough County should welcome the ride-share companies Uber and Lyft instead of fighting to preserve a monopoly that has been enjoyed by traditional cab companies. I still feel that way. However, if Uber and Lyft are allowed to operate the way they want, taxi companies should have a greater latitude to do the same – lest the free market put them out of business. That led to an exchange…

The shooting happened Tuesday morning at Key Vista Apartments near the University of South Florida in Tampa. Dominic Calabro: Keeping cigars in the Cigar City

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Politicians talk repeatedly about doing things to help create jobs. But, sometimes, doing nothing is the best option. We hope that newly-elected lawmakers understand that less government intrusion is often the key to keeping the American Dream alive. A great example is the 2009 “Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.” This innocuously named effort actually increased federal regulation in ways that even many of its supporters now regret. The act gave the Food and Drug Administration the right to regulate…

Clemson pounds Ohio State, prepares for Alabama in Tampa

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It wasn’t just the victory, although that was impressive enough. It wasn’t just the step, though that made a deep imprint, too. No, for Clemson University, Saturday night’s win was the kind of performance that changes perceptions. Clemson clobbered Ohio State in Saturday night’s Fiesta Bowl, winning 31-0 to advance to its second straight national championship game. Once again, Clemson will play against Alabama, which won a five-point game a year ago. Yes, Alabama is likely to be favored. But after…
