Federal spokesman says most complaints like recent one against TBX are found not to have merit

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A spokesman for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) admits that while most complaints filed with his department regarding transportation projects may have some cause, most of them are not merited, and thus no action is ever taken against them. His comments come a day after it was revealed that federal officials have agreed to conduct a preliminary civil rights investigation of the Tampa Bay Express, the controversial project from the Florida Department of Transportation that would expand what is known as the  Downtown Tampa Interchange…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.3.16 – Only six more months of hearing about Hillary vs.The Donald – every day

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Well today’s the Indiana primary, and aren’t you all excited about that? I didn’t think so. A CNN/ORC poll released  yesterday shows that more than eight of ten Americans believe Hillary Clinton will challenge Donald Trump for president in November. That was taken before Indiana votes today, or Nebraska next week, or California and New Jersey next month. But it’s still more fun to talk about a contested convention than start talking everyday about a Hillary vs. Donald confrontation, since that’s still…

Mitch Perry Report for 4.15.16 – The Brawl in Brooklyn

While it can be annoying to have the audience cheering and jeering, somehow it felt appropriate in the Big Apple – it reminded me of the time when Al Gore and Bill Bradley engaged…

FDOT officials said that as part of the ultimate construction of the project, there are properties in Seminole Heights and Tampa Heights that will be have to be removed – including the former Faith Temple Missionary Baptist Church on Palm Avenue that in the past five years…

For the second consecutive month, citizens who oppose the Tampa Bay Express marched through a Tampa neighborhood on Saturday, a neighborhood that could be severely impacted if the transportation project comes to fruition. A crowd of approximately 80 or so citizens met in the V.M. Ybor neighborhood to protest against the proposed $3.3 billion project, which would add tolled express lanes to I-275 in Tampa, as well as parts of I-4 and I-75. The issue has roiled the Seminole Heights, Tampa Heights…

Mitch Perry’s Top 10 stories in Hillsborough politics of 2015

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

As first said by Greek philosopher Heraclitus, in the universe change is the only constant. Nowhere was that more applicable than in Tampa Bay during the past 12 months. From the much-ballyhooed dismissal of MaryEllen Elia as Hillsborough County School Board District superintendent to redistricting and the rising (and falling) fortunes for hizzoner Bob Buckhorn, many of the leading political issues of the year centered on shaking up the status quo. With that, here are Hillsborough County’s top ten stories in 2015: 1) MaryEllen Elia…
