The Clearwater Marine Aquarium ā€œhauled inā€ a $25,000 contribution this week to help underserviced local students. Today on Context Florida: Guns on campus, an eternal optimist and technology & the disabled

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today onĀ Context Florida: Tom O’Hara says backers and opponents of letting people bring guns onto Florida’s college campuses can’t logically support their arguments until there’s more slaughter to analyze. It appears that a bill that would allow students with a concealed-carry permit to bring their guns onto the state’s public college campuses will become law next year. Sally Swartz calls Hobe Sound resident Jeff Wittman an ā€œeternal optimist.ā€ Wittman has never stopped believing that a 46-acre chunk of Florida scrub…

Today on Context Florida: Sen. Jeb Bush, Rick Scott & hospital regulations and academic librarians

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today onĀ Context Florida: As the prospects for President Jeb Bush fade, Jac VerSteeg says his fans should consider a fallback plan: U.S. Sen. Jeb Bush, R-Florida. That goal has many advantages. It allows Jeb to concentrate on a single state, and a state that knows him better than Iowa or New Hampshire. He has higher name recognition in Florida than any of the potential Republican or Democratic candidates, even though he has not stood for election in Florida since 2002.…

When students took the writing test earlier this month, technical problems caused the Escambia School District to suspend testing for three consecutive days. And the problems weren’t just in the Pensacola metro area. Districts all over the state reported similar problems. If you think that was…

Jeb Bush pens op-ed for Atlanta Journal Constitution defending philosophy on education

in Uncategorized by

IĀ wonder whyĀ none of the Florida’s papersĀ reprint Jeb’s op-ed, which originallyĀ appeared in the Atlanta Journal Constitution,Ā defendingĀ his philosophy on education reform.Ā  An excerpt: Right now, the No. 1 issue facing America’s governors is the economy. In the short term, the focus, rightly, is on creating jobs and spurring growth to get our economy back on track. But nothing matters more to our long-term economic health and stability than the quality of education in classrooms today. The challenges are clear. The high-wage jobs…

Floridians confident in the state’s elections processes and technology

in Statewide by

According to new findings by the Leadership Florida/Nielsen Company 2010 Sunshine State Survey, there is a deeper level of confidence among Floridians in the state’s elections processes and technology. After the embarrassment and national debacle of Florida’s failed 2000 presidential election counts and recounts, the state’s aggressive moves to restore credibility to local and state elections has been reflected in much higher approval ratings for the changes. When asked about areas in which the state is doing a good job,…

In the face of declining poll numbers, here’s what Charlie Crist can do to save his campaign

in Peter/Statewide by

A new St. Petersburg Times/Miami Herald/Bay News 9 poll finds only 42 percent of likely Florida voters think Charlie Crist is doing a good or excellent job as governor — by far the worst approval rating of Crist’s 34 months in office. Dear Charlie, It’s been a long time since I helped out on one of your campaigns. In fact, I think the last time we worked together you were running for…the U.S. Senate (do you remember the time when,…
