Koch Brothers latest to seize on ‘ban the box’ movement; is Tampa next?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

“Banning the Box” on job applications for companies who contract with the city of Tampa was a bridge too far for the City Council to consider back in February, but it’s good enough for the Koch Brothers and other major corporations. In February, the Council declined to pass a law that would have “banned the box” for city contractors. “Ban the box” refers to the nationwide movement that has spread over the past decade, where local governments have removed the…

Mitch Perry Report for 4.24.15 — The politics of convenience

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Running for president means sometimes having to alter your brand, and  sometimes your integrity. Case in point — Rand Paul. Nobody has been more prominent in American politics in being critical of drone strikes, particularly against American citizens, such as Anwar al-Awlaki, an Al Qaeda operative killed by a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in 2011. In 2013, Paul arguably kicked off his presidential campaign with his dramatic, 13-hour filibuster against such strikes. But now he’s running for the GOP…

Ronald Reagan, MLK, rapper Minaj: 2016 candidates are name-droppers

It’s all part of a not-so-subtle effort to boost their own appeal by borrowing from the luster of others. Call it gilt by association. There’s a flip side, too: Republicans tossing out the names of Democratic foils to rile up…
