eBay pulls Charlie Crist painting auction, but re-posts a gentler version

in Statewide by

Trying to unload an oil painting of Gov. Charlie Crist seems to have gotten mired in, well, politics. The online auction site eBay yanked the Republican Party of Florida’s auction of an oil painting of Crist Wednesday, apparently reacting to political content attacking Crist in the party’s auction ad. The ad was re-posted with the language removed, said RPOF spokeswoman Katie Gordon Betta, but the party lost nearly 100 bids on the painting, one of them for $6,200. By late Wednesday, bidding…

A must-read from The New York Times: On the mat, Florida wonders which way is up

in Statewide by

A must-read from this weekend’s New York Times: Ever since the 1920s Florida has been cast as the place people go to escape contemplation, not to indulge in it. But in the past year, from Pensacola to Miami Beach, Floridians have been soul searching. And for good reason. The state’s decades-long binge on real estate has given way to empty homes in rich and poor neighborhoods alike. Hundreds of thousands of jobs have vanished, empty stores are everywhere and even…

St. Petersburg makes The New York Times…for the wrong reason

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

“If you’re lying on a sidewalk, whether you’re homeless or a millionaire, you’re in violation of the ordinance,” a city attorney in St. Petersburg, Fla., said in June, echoing Anatole France’s immortal observation that “the law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges.” The rest of Barbara Ehrenreich’s must read op-ed here.

Golisano, who owns homes in both New York and Florida, recently switched his residency to the Sunshine State. The New York Times also reported Golisano was the driving influence beyond the recent New York Senate leadership coup which threw the body into turmoil. Always the fundraiser,…

5 things I think about today’s paper

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

I just added home delivery of The New York Times, so it takes me about two days to get through both newspapers, which means I am still catching up on yesterday’s mammoth Sunday edition of the NYT. But here’s what I think of today’s paper (shorter version because of DMB week). 1. Few newspapers use color as well as the St. Petersburg Times. I always read the USA Today on Mondays to get a complete read on the sports world,…

Why it’s great the Times won 2 Pulitzers

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

I have some pretty strong thoughts on the Pulitzers, specifically the pursuit of them. But I’ll hold off while the Times is still celebrating (Yeah, champagne and cake! Only problem is wondering who will get laid off in order pay for those bottles of Veuve). And the Times should celebrate and we, as its local readers, should be proud of the newspaper. Think of all the major awards given out…the Oscars, the Grammys, the Tonys, etc. Then think of all…
