Mitch Perry Report for 8.12.16 – DEA just says no to loosening pot restrictions

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Advocates for both medical marijuana and the outright legalization of the herb were dealt a blow yesterday when the Drug Enforcement Administration rejected a bid to reconsider how it treats marijuana under federal drug control laws. Along with much more serious drugs such as heroin and acid, pot is considered a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substance Act. The hope was that it was reclassified as a Schedule II drug, which is how speed and oxycodone are currently scheduled. But…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.11.16 – Marco Rubio isn’t dominating Patrick Murphy or Alan Grayson in latest Q Senate poll

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Before we dig into the new poll on the Florida Senate race, can I reference the lead story in this morning’s Tampa Bay Times? Two men get into a road-rage argument on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Plant City. One guy pulls out a gun and shoots the other dead. He then “cooperates” with the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Dept., isn’t charged, and is free to go home, where he tells a reporter who confronts him that, “it’s been a very taxing day.”…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.10.16 — Aleppo needs water

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

I’m sure that after you got yourself up this morning, you might have reached for a cup of coffee, juice or water. It’s something that we don’t have to think too hard about, usually. Now let’s go across the globe — to Aleppo, Syria. The United Nations on Tuesday called for a “humanitarian pause” in the fighting in Aleppo to allow for immediate access to repair the electricity and water networks. They report that between 250,000-275,000 people have been trapped…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.9.16 – On a “rigged” election

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Last week (perhaps coincidentally as his poll numbers began dropping precipitously), Donald Trump suggested that the general presidential election this fall could be “rigged.” In Ohio last week, Trump said that he has heard “more and more” that the November election will be rigged — suggesting to his supporters that the outcome of the election is out of the hands of voters. That prospect has been further promulgated by one of Trump’s biggest supporters in the media, Sean Hannity. The Fox News…

Ousted from DNC, Debbie Wasserman Schultz fighting to stay in House

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz easily won her South Florida district six times, but a Democratic primary challenge from a Bernie Sanders-backed law professor is making her seventh bid less than a sure bet — and her recent resignation as Democratic National Committee chairwoman hasn’t helped. Tim Canova has raised about $2.8 million thanks to the former presidential candidate’s endorsement, an almost unheard of amount for a first-time candidate and almost as much as Wasserman Schultz’s $3 million. He is…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.5.16 – Rio or bust

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For those of you who are excited about the Summer Olympics, now is your time. Comcast says it will be broadcasting 6,800 hours of  programming on 11 channels, and “up to” 41 live streams. So they’ve got you covered. The NFL also returns this weekend – sort of – with the Hall of Fame ceremonies from Canton, Ohio taking place on Saturday night, and Bucs fans will no doubt be excited to see Tony Dungy get his time in the spotlight.…

Cash for opponent pours in as Debbie Wasserman Schultz struggles

in Statewide by

The Democratic National Convention is fertile fundraising ground this week for one Florida congressional candidate, but not in the traditional sense of high-priced donor dinners or lobbyist happy hours. In fact, Tim Canova isn’t even in Philadelphia. Instead, the political novice who wants to unseat Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is reaping big financial rewards from days of nonstop publicity about her resignation from the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee after a hack of embarrassing party emails. Call it viral…
