Joe Henderson: Tom Lee’s tough, surprising choice

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

I’m a little surprised by Tom Lee’s decision to run for re-election to the state Senate. Along with just about everyone else in the media and Florida politics, I’ve had lengthy chats with Lee about his future since a judge drew new district lines that essentially forced him to make a tough decision. Because his current Brandon home now lies in a different district than the one Lee represents, he had three choices: Challenge Senate Majority Leader Bill Galvano if…

Tom Lee to run for re-election to the Florida Senate

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After months of deliberation, Hillsborough County Republican Tom Lee has apparently decided to run for re-election to the newly created Senate District 20 seat later this fall. The Tampa Bay Times first reported the news. Lee is currently serving in Senate District 24, a seat he won back in 2012. It was a return to the Legislature after a six-year interregnum following his defeat toĀ Alex SinkĀ in the contest for Chief Financial Officer in 2006. Before that, he served a full…

John Dicks raises more money than any other Hillsborough County Commission District 6 candidate in May

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There hasn’t been any publicly published polls of note in the ever competitive Hillsborough County Commission District 6 contest, so the publicly released fundraising figures are one indication about how the candidate’s are faring. Last month, former Plant City Mayor John Dicks out fundraised his competition on both sides of the aisle, with the Democrat taking in $6,560 in May. However, his $41,950 total fundraising places him only fifth out of the six major candidates in the race, which Dicks…

In a stultifying warm room at the Ferguson Center of Law in downtown Tampa Friday, allĀ of those candidates, with the exception of RepublicanĀ Jim Norman, came before the Tampa Tiger Bay Club, where transportation issues like Go Hillsborough…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.19.16 – The yin and yang of Donald J. Trump

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Let’s talk about somebody I assiduously generally eschew writing about in this space, Donald Trump. (That’s not to make any editorial point at all. It’s just that there’s so much going on in news and politics right now, and you can get your Trump fill a thousand other places on the internet). On Tuesday, Trump told Reuters that he’s willing to talk to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to try to stop Pyongyang’s nuclear program, which, as the Reuters…

Jim Norman gets crushed in Hillsborough County Republican straw poll

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Jim Norman comeback story has hit a roadblock. The former Hillsborough County Commissioner is trying to revive his political career this year as he contends for the open countywide District seat this year, but he came in a distant second to businessman Tim Schock in a straw poll vote held in the Hillsborough County Republican Executive Committee on Tuesday night, losing 66-13. ā€œI think this shows where the grassroots strength really resides in this race,ā€ Schock said after the…

Brian Willis adds to his fundraising lead in Democratic Hillsborough County District 6 contest

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Tampa attorney Brian Willis raised over $9,000 in his race for the Hillsborough County Commission District 6 seat last month, and leads all Democrats in fundraising in the race with $86,233. In a statement, Willis noted that his total number of contributors outranks the other three Democrats in the race – attorney and Sierra Club official Pat Kemp, former Plant City Mayor John Dicks, and former county commissioner and Tampa city council member Tom Scott. “The hard work we put…
